Hi, I am planning to buy a Kodiaq Sportline. It came to my attention that it does not have hill start assist and hill descent control. How crucial is this technology for normal hill driving? Does the Kodiaq Sportline handle hill drives easily, and does it feature any additional technology to compensate for hill hold or hill descent?

The Skoda Kodiaq Sportline does not come equipped with hill hold or hill descent control. While hill hold assist is a convenient feature, especially for steep urban parking ramps or stop-start traffic on inclines, it’s not essential if you know how to manage the car on slopes. Hill descent control, on the other hand, is primarily useful for off-road conditions with loose surfaces. It’s not a feature you will miss in normal hill driving situations. This Skoda car is powered by a 204hp, 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine paired with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The engine offers strong torque and smooth performance, which helps the car climb inclines easily. However, since the DSG is a twin-clutch unit, it can roll back slightly if you take your foot off the brake before the clutch engages. This is typical behaviour for such transmissions. You can easily work around this. Either use your left foot lightly on the brake until you feel the clutch bite, or engage the electronic parking brake when stationary on a slope. It automatically releases as you press the accelerator, making hill starts much easier.

I'm upgrading from a 2021 Tata Safari adventure edition. I loved its looks, engine and middle row comfort. But, now I'm looking for a 7-seater car in the 40-50 lakh range (ex-showroom). The rear-most seats don't have to be very spacious, as I mostly fold them for boot space and occasionally carry a 6th passenger. I need a strong engine, good comfort for the first two rows and decently kitted out. A good speaker system is a must. I will use this car only for outstation trips. I prefer diesel cars with good road presence, but if other options are compelling, I will consider them too.

While your preference is for a diesel car, we suggest you consider the Skoda Kodiaq, which is a petrol-only model. Its 2-litre turbo-petrol engine is strong and punchy, and the SUV's good high-speed stability makes it a great road trip car. The third row is tight on space, but this shouldn't be a deal breaker given your occasional use of the last row. With the last row down, the Kodiaq offers loads of room for luggage. The Kodiaq is also well kitted out, and you'll like the sound quality from the Canton sound system. Do note, fuel economy isn't great in town, but the Kodiaq returns reasonable numbers on highway drives. If a diesel is a must, the new MG Majestor is an option for you. It's a size or two larger than your Tata Safari and scores big for road presence. The large size also means the Majestor is big on space. Performance is good, and there are also loads of features packed in. The only question mark for now is the price, but we expect it to be within your budget.

I want to buy a seven-seater car in the ₹50-60 lakh budget range, with good mileage and power. Should I opt for the Fortuner or consider some other car?

While the Toyota Fortuner has strong road presence and a powerful image, it does not offer a premium and sophisticated experience that is expected of the price. The Skoda Kodiaq would be a better choice as it has the right level of premiumness and performance, and is a lot more comfortable than the Fortuner. Mileage numbers will be similar for both SUVs, but the diesel engine in the Fortuner would be a bit easier on the pocket. Our recommendation would be the Skoda Kodiaq as it offers better value and is a better product overall.

I drive 20-30km on weekends within the city with my family of four. My budget is ₹20-50 lakh. I want a smooth, reliable, self-driven car with luxurious interiors and a wow factor for my teenage kids. I prefer petrol vehicles and am slightly averse to EVs due to reports of battery issues and fire hazards. Suggest to me which SUV or car I should go for, considering there’s less innovation in the latter segment?

The Skoda Kodiaq is a great choice given your budget and requirements. It is a luxury SUV with a high-quality interior and all the features you would expect in a luxury car.The petrol engine is smooth, and it offers excellent performance in the city and on the highways. The cabin is spacious, the ride is comfy, and as a package, this Skoda car is extremely appealing.
