I want to buy a car with a budget of ₹16-18 lakh ex-showroom under my employer’s car lease policy. My usage is very light, around 1000 km per month. I currently have a Swift VXi on which I’ve done 30,000 km in 4 years. The car is used mostly in the city with occasional highway trips. I want a petrol manual with a good driving experience like my Swift. I am confused between Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, and Honda Elevate. Should I consider extending my budget for an XUV 7XO AX7 or should I wait for the Hyundai Creta update (I like the Dark Edition)? Please suggest the most valuable car in this budget with its recommended variant.

If the driving experience is the top priority, the Skoda Kushaq will be the right pick for you. It's got punchy turbo-petrol engines, and handling is very enjoyable. The updated Kushaq launches next month and packs in a few more features, and also stronger air conditioning. While Skoda has not announced prices as yet, you should get a fully-loaded 1.0 TSI with a manual gearbox within your budget. 

Of the other options, the Honda Elevate is also worth considering. Engine performance and handling are good, but refinement isn't great for this segment. 

The Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7 is great, but it might be too large for your requirements. Also, fuel economy is lower than the alternatives on your list. The Hyundai Creta is a practical pick, and the 1.5 petrol engine and manual gearbox are easygoing, but unexciting.

Hi, I live in a rural area of Telangana where I drive mostly on highways and expressways. I currently own a Honda Amaze diesel and want to upgrade. I am confused between the Skoda Kushaq and the Honda Elevate. Which one should I go for?

The Honda Elevate and Skoda Kushaq are good options for your usage. Given that you use a Honda Amaze, there will be a comfort factor in sticking to the Honda brand with the Elevate. 

The Elevate is a well-engineered product with a robust suspension being one of the highlights. Top versions also get camera-based ADAS, which provides an additional layer of safety, especially on highway drives. Where the Elevate will leave you a bit wanting is in the powertrain. The engine is strong and likes to rev, but doesn't have the mid-range punch of a turbo-petrol. Further, the Elevate's CVT feels basic for this class of SUV. 

The Skoda Kushaq doesn't have the same sense of space as the Elevate. However, the Kushaq has stronger turbo-petrol engines and better gearboxes. The 1-litre turbo feels punchy enough while the more powerful 1.5-litre turbo delivers exciting performance. If you enjoy driving, you'll also love the Kushaq's keen handling. The updated Kushaq that launches soon also promises enhanced AC cooling, which was an issue on the original model.

In essence, the Elevate is a safer, more familiar choice, while the Kushaq will be a more exciting choice for you.

Hi, I need an automatic car for a daily commute of 50 km on weekdays in Mumbai city. I will hardly be taking any long trips on weekends or otherwise. Which car would you suggest: Harrier Petrol, 7XO Diesel or Seltos NA/Turbo, considering that I currently drive a Kushaq 1.0 manual? Budget is 25 lakh.

Purely as an urban commuter, the Kia Seltos NA Petrol IVT is the best option in terms of smoothness and user-friendliness. It is larger than your current car, and will feel like a proper upgrade in terms of space, comfort, features and tech.
Do keep in mind that your Skoda Kushaq's Turbo-Petrol engine is more powerful in comparison, and the Seltos 1.5 NA's performance could feel a bit underwhelming on the open road. Its turbo-petrol version will feel relatively more effortless.
The Tata Harrier and XUV 7XO are larger cars, and since you don't plan to use the new car for long trips, these could feel too big to drive in Mumbai's traffic.

I want to buy a mid-size SUV for city and highway driving to replace my 2105 Corolla Altis. I do not want a very bulky vehicle. I am considering between the new Kushaq and the Seltos. What is your advice?

Between the two we would suggest going for the Kia Seltos as per your requiremnt, For city driving it is easy to recommend the 1.5 litre CVT as the naturally aspirated engine is refined has smooth power delivery and the CVT gearbox's smooth nature is perfect for you daily commutes and despite being one of the largest cars in the segment, it reamisn a car that is easy to drive and park.
The new Seltos is spacious, comfortable and has a big boot too. It is also loaded with features and boast of one of the most premium interiors in the segment.
We still haven't driven the Skoda Kushaq facelift, but it remains mechanically almost identical, except the 1.0 litre turbo petrol engine will get a new 8-speed automatic gearbox, and that is something that we are keen to try and to see if that makes a whole lot of difference. So stay tuned for the Autocar India review.

Hi, I would like to replace my 2015 Ford Figo diesel with a new car. I quite like the new Škoda Kushaq and want to buy the 1.0-litre automatic. My primary usage will be around the city, with 3-4 highway runs in a month. Should I go for it or wait for the VW Taigun facelift? With these turbo engines, will the fuel efficiency take a hit? Please advise.

The Skoda Kushaq is a good choice for your requirements. The 115hp, 1.0-litre TSI engine is peppy, the cabin is comfortable, and the build quality is good too. Coming from your Ford Figo, you will also enjoy the driving experience. As for fuel efficiency, yes, the turbo-petrol engine will be less efficient than your current diesel. In our efficiency tests, the Kushaq 1.0 TSI with the 6-speed AT delivered just 8.5kpl in the city and 12.4kpl out on the highway. However, the updated Kushaq comes with an 8-speed gearbox, so expect slightly better efficiency.

As for the Volkswagen Taigun facelift, it will essentially be the same car as the Kushaq. So there won't be much difference in terms of performance, efficiency or comfort. The notable differences will be in the exterior styling and certain features. 

So it only makes sense to wait for the facelift if you really like the look of the Taigun better than the Kushaq.

Looking for an automatic petrol car. My city driving is around 10-15 km on average. Budget around ₹15 to 20 lakh.

You have a few options in the Rs 15-20 lakh range, and its hard to pinpoint something without knowing more about your requirements like rear space, features you'd like or even a body style. Since you are driving mostly in the city, we would recommend either the Skoda Slavia or the Kushaq or their Volkswagen counterparts, the Virtus and the Taigun.
The cars offer up a comfortable ride, and even the sedans have plenty of ground clearance. Importantly, the automatic versions come with a torque convertor gearbox, which is the smoothest type of automatic around and something you will appreciate in stop-start and slow city speeds.

Hi, I am using a Duster 110 RXZ and now want to sell it and buy a new SUV. What would you suggest, a petrol or a diesel SUV? My monthly run is around 1,000 km, and I have already driven 85,000 km in 8 years. My budget is around Rs 20 lakh, and I need a good, tough SUV that can be used for very long drives.

Since your monthly running is not very high, you can opt for a petrol SUV. In the Rs 20 lakh budget, you can consider the Tata Sierra, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Skoda Kushaq, to name a few. All three are good options and will serve you well.
The Hyundai Creta and Seltos are mechanically identical, while the Kushaq and Taigun share a lot between them.  To be fair, it comes down to the design and features you prefer.
The Renault Duster is also a great option to consider, and while prices are not out yet, it is likely to be in the same range as the above-mentioned SUVs. However, our recommendation will be to wait for the new upcoming Duster.
Since you already have the older version and have a good experience with it, the new one will be worth waiting for. It has modern looks, a premium cabin and lots of features, making it a strong contender in this segment.

I am 60 years old, I am holding a Ford EcoSport now want a similar replacement. My budget is 20 lakh. Please advise.

While Ford has sadly exited the Indian market, leaving behind no direct successor to the EcoSport, there are some spiritual successors from other brands that you could look at. The closest in feel and philosophy is the Skoda Kushaq, which has just been given a facelift that will officially go on sale next month.
Like the EcoSport, you get a solid and robust feel, whether it is in aspects like door shut, steering weight, high-speed stability and even interior build quality. The latest version gets more modern features, in case that's what you are after; the only downside is that it's not the most spacious SUV in its category.
The biggest similarity between the Kushaq and the EcoSport, however, is how great they both are from behind the wheel. They are comfortable while being sharp to drive, and have strong engines that are a joy whether you're going slow or quickly. We think this is the SUV you should consider.

As a first-time buyer with a budget of ₹12.5 lakh, I am confused between the Skoda Kushaq Signature and a year-old Citroen Basalt, and would appreciate your advice on which is the better choice.

The Citroen Basalt is very spacious and offers a more comfortable ride, but the year-old Basalt is poorly equipped. While the new car has made a huge leap forward, the Skoda Kushaq will still feel like the more rounded package, with a better interior fit all around and more features too.

My query is about choosing between the Tata Sierra, Renault Duster, the new Kia Seltos, and the Skoda Kushaq. My budget is ₹20 lakh. Please guide me.

The Renault Duster will launch in March, and prices for the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine will be revealed then. From what we know, the Duster has a strong road presence thanks to its bold and aggressive design and tough demeanour. We are yet to see how it performs out on the road, so we will reserve our comments till that happens.
The Tata Sierra is a strong package with lots of character in its design and styling and a strong set of features. What also helps its case is the wide array of variants on offer with multiple powertrain options. Its strengths remain its design, space and ride comfort. If you care for these three, the Sierra is the one to go for.
The Skoda Kushaq was recently updated, and it gets new features like massage seats at the rear. However, it still remains a car for driving enthusiasts, especially with the 1.5-litre TSI engine. If you enjoy getting behind the wheel and prefer the driver's seat, the Kushaq would be a very good option. However, what it gains in handling, it loses in ride, and it just isn't as plush as the Sierra. It also misses the character and road presence of the Tata.
The Kia Seltos is a massive improvement from what it was before and is loaded with features. It also gets a host of engine and gearbox options, and the only real deterrent is its aggressive styling. If you don't mind that, the Seltos is a top choice in the segment.
