I currently own a 2018 Jeep Compass 2.0 diesel manual. I am now looking for a comfortable petrol or hybrid automatic SUV that can match the driving dynamics of the Compass. I drive around 30 km daily in the city and love driving. Please suggest suitable options.
With an on-road budget of ₹22 lakh, I want to buy an SUV in the next 4-5 months that is fun and punchy with reasonable fuel efficiency. I don’t want a Maruti car because the hybrids compromise boot space, and the others aren’t engaging to drive. My main requirements are good rear seat space and an enjoyable driving experience. The MG Hector and Tata Sierra have some variants that fit the bill, but they’re gas guzzlers. Apart from those, are there any other models that fit the bill?
The most fun-to-drive SUVs in your budget are the 1.5-litre Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq twins, which are very engaging thanks to their brilliant dynamics and a powerful, punchy engine.
Both are due for a facelift, and the upgraded Kushaq is just around the corner and scheduled to launch on January 20th 2026. The Volkswagen Taigun facelift will come a month later. Both these SUVs will see some significant enhancements to the air conditioning and interiors.
Top-end variants will come with rear massage seats, a first in the segment. However, one weakness is the rear seat space, which is relatively narrow and best for four.
Therefore, if this is a deal-breaker for you, you could consider the Tata Sierra. It is fantastically spacious, has superb ride and handling and an all-new 1.5 petrol engine, which is smooth, punchy and fairly efficient too.
The Sierra is not as engaging to drive as the Kushaq and Taigun, as it is heavier and has a relaxed power delivery. We would rule out the MG Hector in your case as it is too big, it's not a very engaging car to drive, and as you said, it guzzles fuel.
Hi, we are a family of three adults and one teenager. Over the past 10 years, we have owned a Honda Brio S MT, a Honda City V MT, and a Maruti Celerio AMT. Stick to a sedan since you are used to one, and also, sedans are more fun to drive than SUVs.
You could go for the Skoda Slavia 1.5 or Volkswagen Virtus GT, which comes with a strong 1.5 turbo-petrol mated to a quick-shifting 7-speed twin-clutch.
Both these sedans have superb ride and handling, which makes them fun to drive. At the same time, these sedans are easy to drive too.
My father bought a Honda City 1.5 in 1999, and he was fond of all types of cars. He also owned a Standard double-door and even suggested the Tatkal concept to Maruti. I am still using the Honda City that my father bought in 1999, and to this day, there is no match for that generation of the Honda City. Although I own other cars as well, I still drive this amazing Honda City to my office every day.

If you are looking for a new sedan, we would suggest waiting, as options like the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus are due for updates. If you want to buy something right now that is great to drive and looks good too, the Volkswagen Virtus GT with the 1.5 litre TSI engine is worth considering.
My family owns a 2022 Honda WR-V petrol and we are planning to upgrade our car. It will be mostly used in the city and mainly driven by my parents. I am confused between the VW Taigun 1.0 petrol, Honda Elevate, and Tata Curvv, and I am not so sure about the Kia Syros or the newer Victoris. Since you've already owned a Honda car, you might like what the Elevate has to offer. Its ride comfort is its highlight; the high seating will make it easy for your parents to get in and out, and its petrol engine delivers strong performance.
The Volkswagen Taigun is smaller in size, which makes it a bit easier to park and manoeuvre. However, it doesn't feel as user-friendly as the Honda, since the manual's clutch is a touch heavier, and the automatic isn't as seamless as the Elevate's either.
Since you're not keen on the Maruti Victoris or Kia Syros, you can also consider the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus with their 1.5 TSI and dual-clutch automatic transmission combination are the nicest to drive in their segment. Both cars are identical in terms of their platform, build quality, space, comfort, and equipment list, the only differentiating factor being their styling.
Pick the one that appeals to you more. The 1.5 TSI engine gets a cylinder deactivation function as well as an automatic engine stop-start function to curtail fuel consumption.
The Hyundai Verna 1.5, on the other hand, is quick, smooth, and in the real world, it is likely to be a touch more fuel efficient. Also, the top-spec Verna is also cheaper than its rivals, making it worthy of serious consideration. The only downside is that its dynamics don't feel as sporty as the VW or Skoda. But if you don't plan to attack winding roads often, you will be happy with what the Verna has to deliver.

The Tata Sierra Turbo-AT is a great option within Rs 20 lakh. It has a smooth powertrain packing ample performance. It does well in terms of cabin and boot space, and ride quality is very good too.
If you'd like to get a sedan instead, consider the 1.5 TSI DSG versions of the Volkswagen Virtus or Skoda Slavia, both of which are great to drive.
