My budget is Rs 20 lakh. I am looking for an all-wheel-drive car as I frequently travel to the mountains and need a safe, comfortable and reliable family car. Safety, comfort and reliability are my top priorities.

There are not many AWD or 4x4 vehicles that meet all your requirements perfectly, but there are some to consider. Your best option is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, the ZXI Plus AWD AT variant, although you will have to stretch your budget slightly.
It is a 5-star rated car from both Bharat NCAP and Global NCAP, so you're well covered on safety, and overall, it is a well equipped and comfortable family car. As a bonus, it comes with Maruti's renowned reliability and low running costs.
Alternatively, you could consider the Mahindra Thar Roxx, the MX5 2.2 Diesel MT 4x4 variant, which is also safe and offers more space and a more robust 4x4 system, but it's not as reliable or comfortable as the Maruti Suzuki.
Or you could look at the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, which is a capable off-roader and falls easily in your budget, but it is not as comfortable, and its small size makes it less practical as a family car.

I live in Mangalore, Karnataka, and drive 70-90 km daily, with about 70% on NH/SH and 30% on bad rural roads (loose laterite soil, broken tracks, and heavy rain for almost half the year). I need a compact vehicle that can handle both city traffic and the challenging rural and monsoon roads. With no preference for fuel type, which specific cars/SUVs should I consider, and why?

Without knowing your budget, it'll be difficult to recommend an ideal car for you. For under Rs 10 lakh, consider the Tata Punch, a tough little car.
If your budget is between Rs 10-15 lakh, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 4x4 for its small footprint yet rugged nature.

I want to buy a new SUV. I often drive on rough, hilly roads. My budget is below 15 lakh. I need a car that will last a long time.

There are two options for you to consider. The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is a good pick for many reasons. First and foremost is its ladder frame construction that makes the Jimny feel tough and capable to deal with the worst of roads and surfaces. There's also the added ability of 4x4.
The Jimny is great off-road and can take you to places where few other like-priced cars can. The Jimny is also narrow, which comes in handy on hilly roads. Maruti Suzuki's strong after-sales support and easy parts availability will also ensure years of stress-free ownership. Drawbacks on the Jimny are its large turning circle, small cabin (there's only space for 4) and unexciting engine.

If you aren't in need of something as hardcore, the Honda Elevate is an option to consider. It stands out amongst front-wheel drive SUVs thanks to a tough build and robust suspension that feels absorbent even on big potholes and poor roads.
Compared to a Jimny, the Elevate is more upmarket inside and has comfortable seating. Being a Honda car, it will last long without giving any major mechanical issues.

I love the dimensions of the Jimny, and I feel they suit a city like Delhi very well. The car also has a lot more character in a market where Kia feels like Hyundai and Suzuki feels like Toyota. I am not a power paglu, so the Jimny’s calm performance is not a deal breaker for me. However, it does have some obvious issues - no armrest, no proper bottle holder, and it clearly needs a facelift. That brings me to my question: is a facelift expected anytime soon, or is it the end of the road for the Jimny?

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is small, and its size sure comes in handy on congested city roads. However, the Jimny has a large turning circle, so it's not as easy to drive as a hatchback or other compact SUVs would be.

While there is no facelift of this Maruti Suzuki car due soon, it's also not going to be discontinued for years to come. As for your other concerns, you can buy aftermarket accessories such as a centre armrest and bottle holders to make your Jimny more practical.

I’m planning to buy the Jimny. My primary use is city driving with occasional countryside trips once a month. Which transmission would be a better choice?

The Jimny is slightly down on power, and the manual gearbox helps extract a bit more performance by giving you direct control over gearshifts. However, the difference is quite marginal. Since most of your driving is in the city, we recommend going for the automatic version instead.

I’m planning to buy the Jimny Alpha Automatic, as I’ll be driving in both the city and hills. But my major concern is mileage - what kind of fuel efficiency can I expect?

The automatic version of the Jimny does return a lower mileage than the manual, however, by not too much of a margin. Maruti Jimny mileage is 16.94kpl for the manual and 16.39kpl for the automatic (claimed). In our instrumented real-world testing, the automatic Jimny returned 10.04kpl in the city and 13.56kpl on the highway, as against the manual, which returned 10.86kpl in the city and 14.74kpl on the highway.
