Jimny 5-door will be called Jimny Nomade in Japan.

The made-in-India Suzuki Jimny 5-door will go on sale in Japan this month. To be christened “Jimny Nomade”, the Jimny 5-door will join the locally manufactured Jimny 3-door in the Japanese market, which is sold with two powertrain options. The Jimny 5-door is exclusively made in India and is already being supplied to many RHD and LHD markets overseas.

  1. Jimny 5-door, Fronx for Japan supplied from India
  2. Jimny Nomade will be sold with a 1.5-litre petrol engine
  3. Jimny 3-door for Japan built at Kosai plant

Jimny Nomade mostly identical to Maruti counterpart

After the Fronx, the Jimny Nomade is the second made-in-India Suzuki product to be introduced in Japan in less than one year. Sources tell us that the first shipment of the Jimny Nomade has already reached Japan, and the SUV will be in showrooms within days.

In Japan, the Jimny 3-door is made at Suzuki’s Kosai plant and is sold as the Jimny standard (with a 660cc engine) or the Jimny Sierra (with a 1.5-litre engine). The Jimny 5-door is actually based on the Jimny Sierra. However, Suzuki will call it the Jimny Nomade instead to avoid confusion among buyers.

Unlike the Fronx, which gets an AWD setup and some country-specific changes for Japan, the Jimny 5-door is expected to get minor tweaks over the made-in-India Maruti Suzuki SUV. Sources tell us that the Jimny Nomade won’t be majorly different from the one sold in India; apart from different badging and a few other bits, the colour palette and feature list are expected to be identical.

Under the hood, the SUV will have the same 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Just like every other Jimny on sale, the Jimny Nomade will also come with the Suzuki AllGrip part-time 4WD on all variants.

Bookings for the Jimny Nomade have commenced in Japan. We are told that customers who have booked the Jimny Sierra 3-door and are yet to get their SUV are being given an option to “upgrade” to the Jimny Nomade with a priority delivery commitment for the 5-door SUV.

More details on the made-in-India Jimny are expected to be released at the launch.

The third made-in-India Suzuki product to go on sale in Japan is likely to be recently revealed e Vitara electric SUV that will go on sale there by late 2025.
