The made-in-India Maruti Fronx has joined the long list of Suzuki models that are exported to the South African market. The Fronx is built at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant for the domestic and export markets.

Suzuki Fronx: what's different in the South African model?

The export-market Suzuki Fronx has one fundamental difference from the one that's sold in India. Like the made-in-India Baleno sold in South Africa, the Suzuki Fronx gets a single 1.5-litre petrol engine option, and skips on the 1.2-litre petrol as well as the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol Boosterjet engines.

This is the same 1.5-litre petrol engine that sees duty on the Brezza and the Grand Vitara, and even on MPVs like the Ertiga and the XL6. It churns out 103hp and 138Nm of torque and comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. As far as features are concerned, the list looks identical to the one available in India.

The Suzuki Fronx is one of the latest made-in-India Maruti Suzuki models to be exported overseas.  In South Africa, Suzuki sells many Maruti models under the Suzuki badge as well as some under the Toyota brand. Maruti Suzuki models with the highest export demand are the Dzire sedan, the SwiftS-Presso and Baleno hatchbacks, and the Brezza SUV. In the coming months, the Fronx will also spawn a Toyota derivative that will be called the Urban Cruiser Taisor and it will be sold in India as well as export markets.
