I have been using Tata Punch for a year. For me, this car met all my expectations being a new driver as well as a first-time owner. Now, I want to move towards a more premium segment and comfort with more latest features available in the market. Which car should I buy? I bought the Punch under 10 lakh (on-road). This time, my budget is under 20 lakh. I prefer Indian brands only.

The Tata Safari is the one for you. It will feel like a huge step up compared to a Tata Punch in all aspects - road presence, cabin space, interior quality, equipment, drive experience, etc. Multiple variants of the Safari will fall within your budget - petrol, diesel or turbo-petrol, so based on your usage, you could pick the one that's right for you.
We've experienced the Turbo-petrol AT and Diesel AT, and out of these, the former is our pick for its smoothness, refinement and strong performance.

I’m looking for a car, either an SUV or a sedan. My budget is up to ₹25 lakh. The car must-have: a 5-star safety rating and excellent ride comfort; priority is the best suspension in this price bracket for a mix of highway cruising and rough roads.

We suggest you wait for the updated Mahindra XUV 7XO (earlier XUV700), which is launching on 5th January, or for the German siblings, the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, as both are due for updates soon as well. Otherwise, you can go ahead with the Tata Harrier or Safari.

We currently own a Nexon diesel and are very happy with it, but we now want to buy a seven-seater - most likely the Tata Safari - in a petrol version since the vehicle will be used rarely. The petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari were expected to launch today, but seem to have been delayed. Why was the launch postponed, and when can we expect the petrol models to be released?

The launch of the petrol versions of the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari will happen this December for sure.

We will also be driving both Harrier and Safari this month, and our full review will be out on our website and YouTube channel towards the 3rd week of this month, so do look out for that.

I am very happy with my Ertiga diesel and want to buy a new diesel car within a budget of ₹15-18 lakh. Which is the best option among Kia, XUV700, or Safari? I need the car for city as well as urban travel.

By Kia, we assume you mean the Kia Carens Clavis, and this is the car we would recommend for you. Since your travel is in the city and urban environments, this Kia car feels the easiest to maneuver of the three. Moreover, with your budget, you will get a better-equipped Clavis than a Tata Safari or Mahindra XUV700.

Whether to buy the Tata Safari or XUV700 for a daily 30km ride in busy streets and twice-a-year tours to a neighbouring state of around 1,200km?

The Tata Safari will do well on the highway trips, and it has a better third row, so if this is important for you, go with it. However, the XUV700 is the better all-rounder, and the diesel engine is far more refined and delivers excellent performance. In the city, it will feel lighter on its feet too.
Moreover, the Mahindra XUV700 is due for an update, and this will be released next month. Thus, if you can, we would recommend you wait until that version has launched.

I’m confused between the Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV700 - which should I choose?

Between the Tata Safari and the Mahindra XUV700, it’s the Mahindra car that we would recommend. It is more comfortable, has strong engines, offers a more refined driving experience and has better features.

The Safari scores well on design, feels a bit tougher over bad sections and has the more spacious third row, but all things considered, the Mahindra XUV700 is better. It might be worth waiting for a few months, however, as the XUV700 facelift is just around the corner.

I am about to buy an automatic, petrol, 7-seater car, keeping the next 12 years in mind. Based on my budget, I have shortlisted the XUV700 AX5 and the Hyundai Alcazar Prestige (DCT). I am a moderate user; my current car has done only around 35,000 km in the last 12 years. My usage is a mix of highway and city driving. If I choose mileage, I feel the Alcazar is better, but in terms of build size and looks, I prefer the XUV700 AX5. I am a bit puzzled between these two. Any suggestions?

The Mahindra XUV700 is more spacious and has a punchier engine. Since you plan to hold on to your cars for a long time, we'd recommend you wait till the first quarter of 2026, when Mahindra brings in the updated XUV700 with the latest in terms of tech and features.
Another option which you may consider is the upcoming Tata Safari petrol AT - as a seven-seater, it is likely to be comfier than the XUV700 and Hyundai Alcazar.

Hi, I am a proud owner of a Tata Aria for the last 15 years, and now I am looking to give it a final rest. I am considering the Safari, HyCross, and XUV700. As per your suggestion, which one would suit me best? My budget is between Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh.

The Toyota Innova HyCross hybrid is a no-nonsense MPV that delivers on all aspects - comfort, space, fuel efficiency, and with Toyota's backing, promises a trouble-free ownership experience. Since you like to keep your cars for a long time, the Innova Hycross hybrid is the safest bet.

The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700 are tough SUVs, and while both are well-equipped, the Tata car is more comfortable than the Mahindra car for passengers seated in the third row. Meanwhile, the XUV700 is a lot smoother and more refined than the Tata Safari. If you are picking between these two, we'd suggest waiting for the heavily updated XUV700, expected in the first quarter of 2026.

I want to buy a new premium 5-seater car with a budget of around ₹30 lakh. Mileage is also important to me. My average running is about 1,000 km per month.

There aren't any sedans or for that matter too many other vehicles at the Rs 30 lakh mark today. Your best options would be to look at an SUV like the Tata Safari, or if you are open to an electric car, you could check out the Mahindra XEV 9e or the upcoming Mahindra XEV 9S, which would give you more of that premium feel you want.

I have been using a Tata Altroz for about four years now. It has been good for city driving, but now I want an SUV for long drives, preferably a 7-seater. I am confused between the Tata Safari and the Toyota Innova HyCross. Which one should I buy?

Both the Tata Safari and the Toyota Innova HyCross have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it depends on what suits your needs better.
The Tata Safari has proper SUV looks, comes loaded with features, and is a lot more affordable than the Innova HyCross. The Toyota Innova HyCross, on the other hand, is a much better seven-seater. The hybrid is extremely efficient, even more than the Safari diesel, and it will prove to be a reliable and peaceful companion for years to come. The interior quality, though, is not fitting for a car costing over Rs 30 lakh.
The lower variants, which compete with the Safari on price, get a naturally aspirated petrol engine, which is efficient on its own but not as efficient as a diesel engine, and these variants also miss out on a lot of the wow features that the top Safari variants offer.
