The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650

The power chart of the Royal Enfield 650 twins

Royal Enfield’s newest engine, the 648cc parallel-twin, is the company’s most powerful production-spec motor. A highlight of this feat is Royal Enfield's claim that this engine can take its near-200kg motorcycles ‘easily over 160kph' and deliver an overall fuel-efficiency figure of 25.5kpl.

The 648cc, air-cooled, SOHC, fuel-injected parallel-twin motor produces 47hp at 7,250rpm and 52Nm of torque at 5,250rpm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-assist clutch. We have now learnt that the engine has been tuned to have a healthy torque curve, with 80 percent (over 40Nm) available from just 2,500rpm. On the other hand, power peaks at just over 7,000rpm, which means it should be quite rev-happy too.

The claimed fuel-efficiency figure of 25.5kpl has been achieved as part of the World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC), which is a system of driving cycles used to measure fuel consumption and emissions in motorcycles. For all of the technical specifications, head here.

RE is also gearing-up for the launch of the 650 twins, which are expected to go on sale in India by late 2018. We will be riding the new Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650 soon in the USA, so stay tuned to our website and social media handles for the latest updates.
