  • Stiff ride quality unlike Classic 350

Design and Quality

9

The Royal Enfield Classic 650 is instantly recognisable as a Classic, but its larger proportions and twin exhausts clearly set it apart from the smaller model. Design is one of its biggest strengths, with excellent fit and finish and impressive attention to detail. Features such as chrome-finished switch cubes and wheel hubs add to the premium feel, while the top variant gets extensive chrome bodywork. The only visual drawback is the noticeable gap between the rear wheel and fender, which looks slightly out of place on an otherwise beautifully styled motorcycle.

Position and Comfort

8

The Classic 650 offers a commanding and natural riding position that feels comfortable for long hours in the saddle. The rider triangle is well judged, making the motorcycle easy to settle into for relaxed rides and highway journeys. However, suspension comfort is not as plush as expected from a motorcycle carrying the Classic name. The twin rear shock absorbers have a firm setup, and while they are slightly improved over some other models using a similar arrangement, bumps and rough patches are still felt quite noticeably. Another drawback is the use of tubed wire-spoke wheels.

Performance and Fuel Economy / Range

8

This Royal Enfield bike is  powered by the familiar 648cc parallel-twin engine. It delivers smooth refinement, easy-going yet punchy performance, and a pleasing exhaust note. The motor feels relaxed during everyday riding and has enough performance for effortless highway cruising.

At 243kg, the Classic 650 is a heavy motorcycle, and that weight is noticeable while pushing it around or making U-turns. Once on the move, however, the weight is managed well and becomes far less noticeable than expected.

Ride and Handling

7

Despite its weight, the Classic 650 handles surprisingly well. It feels composed and confidence inspiring on twisty roads, making it easier to ride than its kerb weight suggests. The conventional telescopic fork suits the motorcycle’s character and performs adequately. Braking performance is strong, although the rear brake can feel a little aggressive and could benefit from a more progressive initial bite.

Features and Safety

7

The feature list is simple and focused. The Classic 650 gets a digi-analogue instrument cluster, a USB-C charging port, a slip-and-assist clutch, and adjustable levers. The overall approach remains traditional rather than feature-loaded.

Price and Verdict (Overall Rating)

8

The Royal Enfield Classic 650 is a motorcycle that appeals more to the heart than the head. Its standout design, premium finish, refined twin-cylinder engine, and relaxed riding experience make it highly desirable.

Questions you may find useful

Hi, I am considering buying the Royal Enfield Classic 650. Is it the right choice? Are there any plans to introduce more colour options? Also, will tubeless tyres be offered anytime soon?

Verified

Whether or not any motorcycle is the right choice for you is something we cannot decide for you. You should take a comprehensive test ride and weigh its pros and cons as well as see its fitness for purpose before you make your decision.Royal Enfield, like other manufacturers, periodically introduces new colours for its offerings, and it could do so for the Classic 650, although a timeline for this isn't known. Lastly, the tubeless spoke wheels for the Classic 650 have been a major ask from both the mainstream media as well as paying customers. Royal Enfield usually listens and acts proactively on this feedback, but as of now, the company hasn't officially commented on when these wheels will be fitted to the bigger Classic.

I’m 35 years old and 5′10″ tall. I’ve been using a Honda Hornet CB160 (original launch version) for 10 years. I have a daily commute of 30-40 km with an equal mix of highway and rough roads. I’m looking for a bike of around 350 cc or slightly more with comfortable seating and suspension for both rider and pillion on short and long rides.

Verified

Since you have had a good experience with your Honda Hornet, you could stick with the same brand and step up to any of the Honda CB350 models. All are mechanically very similar, and picking between the three comes down largely to which one you prefer the look of, as well as pricing. All three are comfortable, torquey, well-finished and decently fuel-efficient machines. If you want to switch things up, Royal Enfield has three 350cc machines which deserve your attention - Hunter, Bullet and Classic. The Hunter is the lightest and most agile machine of these three and will feel the smallest, too. The Bullet and Classic are considerably heavier and have commanding riding positions and great suspension. A test ride of all these 350s should help you decide which is the best option for you.

Hi, I’m 47 years old, 6 ft tall, and my son is 21 years old, 6’3″ tall. I’m looking to buy a Royal Enfield Classic 350, but my son is interested in the Classic 650. My main concern is mileage, as we’ll do more than 95% city driving. Could you please suggest which bike suits us better?

Verified

Since almost all of your usage is going to be in the city, going for the Royal Enfield Classic 650 doesn't make sense because its rear suspension is quite stiff, and in traffic, its 243kg kerb weight will be a task to deal with, especially considering the way the engine will splay your legs out. You are right to worry about fuel efficiency because the 648cc twin is not very fuel efficient at slow city speeds, especially considering the bike's 243kg kerb weight. The Classic 350 is a lovely bike to use inside the city with its upright ergonomics, plush suspension and torquey, soulful engine. The Goan Classic is also something you can take a look at if you like its custom bike look, although it does trade off a little bit of practicality and comfort to the Classic.
