Maruti's domestic passenger vehicle sales (excluding sales to other carmakers, i.e Toyota) declined to 1,35,962 units in May 2025, down from 1,44,002 units last May; a 5.6 percent year-on-year drop. This represents a reversal from April 2025, when sales had shown growth at 1,38,704 units compared to its year-ago performance of 1,37,952 units, up 0.5 percent year-on-year. The company despatched 54,899 SUVs and MPVs in the month, which is a marginal 1.3 percent increase over last May’s numbers, but wholesales of Maruti’s small cars dropped significantly by nearly 10,000 units to 68,278 units. The company exported 31,219 units during the month to international markets.

The May numbers confirm Mahindra's emergence as the clear second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in India's domestic market. The SUV specialists’ passenger vehicle division recorded robust wholesales of 52,431 units, representing a 21 percent year-on-year growth, and thereby establishing a comfortable lead over both Hyundai and Tata. Mahindra also exported 2,388 units during May 2025.

Hyundai

43,861 units, down 10.8 percent YoY

Hyundai’s domestic wholesales of 43,861 units in May narrowly edged past Tata's 41,557 units, marking a 10.8 percent YoY decline for the Korean company. As exports contributed 14,840 units in the month, Hyundai India stands in 2nd place in terms of overall despatches, just ahead of Mahindra’s total of 54,819 units.

Tata

41,557 units, down 11 percent YoY

As Tata’s wholesales in May 2025 dropped 11 percent to 41,557 units, the Indian carmaker has slipped to fourth place in terms of domestic sales. Hyundai’s sister brand is among the few that recorded significant growth in May 2025, with wholesales of 22,375 units; up 14.43 percent. This marks the fifth consecutive month of growth for Kia in the Indian market. The performance in May 2025 follows a strong April showing, where the company despatched 23,623 vehicles, registering an 18.3 percent year-on-year growth over the 19,968 units sold in April 2024.

Skoda
