Hyundai has reclaimed the third position in India's domestic passenger vehicle market in May 2025, ending a three-month streak where it had been relegated to fourth place behind Mahindra and Tata. Maruti still claims the top spot despite a drop in wholesales during the month. Overall, wholesales in May 2025 were tepid, with half of the carmakers on the top 10 list recording a drop.

Maruti
1,35,962 units, down 5.6 percent YoY
Maruti's domestic passenger vehicle sales (excluding sales to other carmakers, i.e Toyota) declined to 1,35,962 units in May 2025, down from 1,44,002 units last May; a 5.6 percent year-on-year drop. This represents a reversal from April 2025, when sales had shown growth at 1,38,704 units compared to its year-ago performance of 1,37,952 units, up 0.5 percent year-on-year. The company despatched 54,899 SUVs and MPVs in the month, which is a marginal 1.3 percent increase over last May’s numbers, but wholesales of Maruti’s small cars dropped significantly by nearly 10,000 units to 68,278 units. The company exported 31,219 units during the month to international markets.
Mahindra
52,431 units, up 21.3 percent YoY
The May numbers confirm Mahindra's emergence as the clear second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in India's domestic market. The SUV specialists’ passenger vehicle division recorded robust wholesales of 52,431 units, representing a 21 percent year-on-year growth, and thereby establishing a comfortable lead over both Hyundai and Tata. Mahindra also exported 2,388 units during May 2025.
Hyundai
43,861 units, down 10.8 percent YoY
Hyundai’s domestic wholesales of 43,861 units in May narrowly edged past Tata's 41,557 units, marking a 10.8 percent YoY decline for the Korean company. Even compared to April 2025’s 44,374 units, Hyundai’s May numbers are down 1.2 percent. As exports contributed 14,840 units in the month, Hyundai India stands in 2nd place in terms of overall despatches, just ahead of Mahindra’s total of 54,819 units.
Tata
41,557 units, down 11 percent YoY
As Tata’s wholesales in May 2025 dropped 11 percent to 41,557 units, the Indian carmaker has slipped to fourth place in terms of domestic sales. Even month-on-month, Tata’s sales have declined by 8.1 percent. On the other hand, the company's EV sales showed a marginal 2 percent improvement to 5,685 units.
Toyota
29,280 units, up 22.2 percent YoY
Toyota has recorded strong growth for the second consecutive month, with a 22.2 percent increase in wholesales in May, following the 33 percent growth posted in April. Of the 29,280 units despatched to Toyota dealers (exports stood at 1,584 units), 10,168 units were rebadged Maruti Suzuki models – namely the Glanza, Rumion, and Taisor.
Kia
22,3154 units, up 14.4 percent YoY
Hyundai’s sister brand is among the few that recorded significant growth in May 2025, with wholesales of 22,375 units; up 14.43 percent. This marks the fifth consecutive month of growth for Kia in the Indian market. The performance in May 2025 follows a strong April showing, where the company despatched 23,623 vehicles, registering an 18.3 percent year-on-year growth over the 19,968 units sold in April 2024.
Skoda
6,740 units, up 133.7 percent YoY
The Skoda Kylaq has pushed the Czech carmaker’s despatches exponentially, with 6,740 units despatched to dealers in May 2025, up a massive 133.7 percent compared to May 2024’s 2,884 units. It should be noted though that May’s wholesales are 7.7 percent down compared to April’s 7,302 units.
MG
6,304 units, up 40 percent YoY
MG Motor India recorded wholesales of 6,304 units in May 2025, representing a 40 percent year-over-year increase compared to the 4,510 units sold in May 2024. This significant increase comes on the back of April 2025’s results, where MG despatched 5,829 units, marking a 23 percent year-over-year growth from 4,725 units in April 2024.
Honda
3,950 units, down 18.1 percent YoY
Honda recorded domestic wholesales of 3,950 units in May 2025, which represents an 18.1 percent decline from the 4,822 units despatched in May 2024. The Japanese brand’s exports also dropped markedly from 6,521 units in May 2024 to just 2,035 units last month.
Volkswagen
2,848 units, down 13 percent YoY
Volkswagen India’s wholesales have declined about 13 percent year-on-year to 2,848 units in May 2025. This also represents a 0.1 percent decline in month-on-month wholesales.
Renault (2,502 units), Nissan (1,354 units), Citroen (333 units) and Jeep (276 units) all recorded sharp de-growth in May 2025. Renault’s wholesales dropped 32.5 percent, Nissan’s 38.8 percent, Citroen by 35.3 percent and Jeep by 19.8 percent, year-on-year.
