•4dHi, I currently own a Jeep Meridian and a BMW 330Li. I’m looking to trade in my BMW 330Li for a better car. The problem with the current 330Li is extremely poor ingress and egress, no ventilated seats and no 360-degree camera. My budget is 85 OTR Delhi. My current usage is a 50 km office drive three times a week and a quarter-yearly outstation trip with less than 400 km one way. Since I love driving and am the sole driver in my family, I don’t need a chauffeur. I’ve owned the Jeep for four years and driven it over 40,000 km. I’ve owned the BMW for two years and driven less than 10,000 km. I’ve seen a few options, including the Volvo XC90, BMW X3 30i, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E200, BYD Sealion 7 and felt that the 5 Series fits best. Please suggest the best way to proceed, or if there are other options that I have missed. I’ve considered selling the Jeep as well and getting two new cars. I’m looking for expert advice.

You're right, the BMW 5 Series LWB is probably your best bet. For a self-driven upgrade, it delivers the best mix of performance, driving feel, luxury and long-distance comfort. The hip point is noticeably higher, and the doors open wider than your 330Li, so getting in and out is easier, and the ride is comfy over broken Delhi roads while still feeling stable out on the highway. It also has the features you're looking for, including ventilated seats.Downsides are that it is a significantly larger car and not as exciting to drive as your 330Li, and since you enjoy driving, that might feel like a step backwards. Also, while ingress and egress are better than the 3 Series, it's still a low-slung sedan, so try it out, and if it's a bother, the BMW X3 30 might suit you better. Same engine, even more features, and almost as much fun to drive. The Sealion 7 is an excellent EV alternative, but it won't be as nice to drive as the BMWs, and though a 400km trip is manageable on a single charge, range anxiety will always hang over the journey.If you're happy with the Jeep, hold on to it for a while. Diesel cars are becoming rarer these days, and you've already taken the depreciation hit, so you might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

•14wI am planning to buy a car within a budget of 90 lakh and am choosing between the Mercedes E 200 and the BMW 530Li LWB. The E-Class has a feature-rich backseat, but it is not as comfortable as the 5 Series on bad roads. Sometimes I have a driver, and sometimes I drive the car myself. The car will run about 15,000 km per year, with 70% on local bad roads and 30% on the highway. The car is for my father, who prefers Mercedes for its brand value, but I personally like the BMW more, despite it having fewer features. I need a suggestion.

The two long-wheelbase luxury limousines are closely matched. Unlike previous iterations of the BMW 5 Series, which created a more emotional connection, this new G68 long-wheelbase model is actually the more rational choice, even compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.It's got (slightly) more space in the rear seat, better ground clearance and, as you've pointed out, more comfortable ride quality. Yet it also remains the better of the two to drive, thanks to a more powerful four-cylinder petrol engine and sharper dynamics. However, despite all this, the E-Class remains the superior choice, if only slightly. That's because where it lags behind the 5, it does so by the smallest of margins.And where it excels, it goes far ahead. More than brand value, it's the sense of luxury in the E-Class that's far greater. Especially in the rear seat with power-reclining seat backs, softer seats and powered window blinds (a sore miss on the BMW).As the car is for your father, and presuming he is primarily chauffeur-driven, this will prove far more appealing. And for the times when you have to drive, the E-Class is no slouch either.

•22wI currently own a 2016 Hyundai Elantra SX MT, along with a 2018 Toyota Fortuner and a 2023 Tata Nexon EV. I am planning to upgrade my Elantra to a luxury sedan within a budget of ₹90 lakh. Due to chronic back pain, I need a car with exceptional ride comfort and suspension. I have considered the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but since I enjoy driving myself, I have also looked at BMW options. However, I am concerned that BMW may not offer the same level of comfort. Could you please advise which luxury sedan would be the best choice for my needs?

Both the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series are large, long-wheelbase sedans that are best enjoyed from the back seat. That being said, both are quite enjoyable from the driver's seat too and come with powerful engines, well-tuned chassis and nicely calibrated steering setups. There are subtle differences - the BMW is more powerful and has a comfier ride, while the Mercedes has sharper steering and gives you the option of a diesel engine. However, both cars are pushing Rs 90 lakh with their on-road prices, but another thing to keep in mind is their large size and long wheelbase, which need to be handled with care over speed bumps or over bad roads, such as the ones you will encounter. The E-Class is the better car of these two overall, but you should also check out the Audi A6, which not only has a more manageable wheelbase with better ground clearance, but it's also more affordable. Plus, it's incredibly comfortable as well as enjoyable to drive.

•28wHello, Autocar. I am currently in the market to buy a new car and am thoroughly confused between the M340i and the new 5 Series. I will be upgrading from a Mercedes-Benz C 300d AMG Line diesel. While the M340i has the beastly B58, the thing holding me back is that it doesn't feel like a segment upgrade compared to my current C-Class. With the 5 Series, the size and opulence make it feel like a solid upgrade, but it has pretty much the same power as my C and lesser torque. Thanks.

Your decision on which BMW car to buy depends on what you value more. The BMW 5 Series, as you rightly identified, is the larger and more opulent car. It is roomier inside, too, but it is essentially a model that prioritises comfort over driving thrills. The engine feels strong when pushed, but the overarching experience is that of a car designed to deliver a calming experience. The BMW M340i is the performance choice. The B58 engine is one of the modern-day greats and will thrill you for years to come. Slick handling and an improved ride with the facelift make the M340i hard to fault as an everyday fun car. Sure, it's no larger than the Mercedes-Benz C 300d you are switching from, but if driving pleasure is high up on your priority list, the M340i is easily the BMW for you.
