I have been using an i10 automatic for the last 13 years. Now, I need to change to a fully automatic small hatchback, nearly the same size as the i10. I don't like AMTs, as there is significant lag, and I also don't prefer torque-converter transmissions due to their fuel economy. Can you suggest a few alternatives?

If you are looking for a small hatchback with a proper automatic transmission and want to avoid AMTs, the Hyundai i20 CVT is the most straightforward recommendation. It uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is smooth, refined and well suited to city driving. The car is a step up from your i10, while still being compact and easy to drive. Being a Hyundai, it also offers a familiar ownership experience. The Honda Amaze CVT is another strong option. This Honda car has a footprint similar to the i20's, but in a sedan body style. The key is to focus on cars with a CVT or a torque-converter automatic. Avoid AMTs and dual-clutch automatics if smoothness is your priority.

Hello all, I am looking to buy a new car with Rs. 10-12 lakh budget. I am confused between i20 IVT hatchback and mini SUV like the Kia Sonet DCA or Tata Nexon AMT. Most of my driving is 3000 to 4000km per month on the highway. I am in Bangalore.

Given your high running of 3,000-4,000km a month on the highway, the priority should be a car that is comfortable, stable at speed and easy to live with over long distances. The Hyundai i20 IVT is a good hatchback, but at that kind of running, a compact SUV makes more sense because of the higher seating position, better ground clearance and generally more comfortable ride over broken patches. Between the Kia Sonet DCT and Tata Nexon AMT, the Sonet DCT is the better fit for your usage. The DCT is a proper automatic gearbox, which is smoother and quicker to respond than an AMT, especially on highways where quick gear changes matter during overtakes. The Sonet also feels more refined, more premium and better put together overall. The Nexon is a solid car, but the AMT gearbox is not as smooth or as enjoyable on long highway runs. The only caveat with the Sonet DCT is that dual-clutch gearboxes can get a bit jerky in heavy stop-start traffic, but on highways, they are in their element. Overall, the Sonet DCT is the best fit for your usage and budget.

Hello, I own a 9 years old Ford Figo S TDCi (manual, diesel) that has covered more than 1.3 lakh km. I’m still proud of this car for its torquey engine, handling, and the way it drives. But lately, its hard clutch in city traffic is causing knee pain, and I am confused whether to keep it or exchange it. Does it make sense to replace my Figo now, and what resale value should I expect? Which current manual fun‑to‑drive hatchbacks come closest to the driving feel and character of the Figo S TDCi? I have considered the SKODA KYLAQ, but it is beyond my current budget. Since SKODA has just opened a showroom in Shillong, does it make sense to stretch for it, or should I stick to a hatchback I don’t want to face problems that I had faced with Ford again. If I decide to keep the Figo, will I face issues related to the parts availability in the coming years? I would love to keep it for as long as possible, but I’m also considering adding a second car like the Alto for city commuting. I am quite confused, so I would really appreciate your valuable suggestion.

You are clearly an enthusiast who values a strong diesel punch and sharp handling, and the Figo S TDCi was one of the best cars in that space. At 9 years and 1.3 lakh km, the car has served you well, but the hard clutch and knee pain are a clear signal that it is time to move on. Resale value will be modest given the age and Ford’s exit, so the decision should be driven by your usage and comfort rather than the resale number. On the replacement, there is no direct hatchback equivalent today. The Skoda Kylaq is the closest in spirit, with a strong turbo petrol engine and a genuinely engaging driving experience. The automatic is also a big plus if you want to avoid clutch fatigue in traffic. The fact that Skoda has opened a showroom in Shillong is a significant positive, and Skoda is a far more stable brand in India today than Ford was at the time of its exit. If you can stretch the budget, the Kylaq is the right move. The Skoda Kylaq price range extends from Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). If the budget is tight, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is the best hatchback alternative. It is not as powerful or as sharp as the Figo S, but it is light, nimble and fun to drive in its own way. The Hyundai i20 N Line is another hatchback option that is quite fun to drive and looks nice and sporty too but its costlier than the Swift. In summary, replace the Figo now and stretch for the Kylaq if you can. It is the closest modern equivalent to what you love about the Figo S TDCi. If the budget does not allow, go for the Swift. Do not hold on to the Figo purely for sentimental reasons, and do not worry too much about resale value at this stage. The decision should be about comfort and driving enjoyment for the next 5-10 years.

Hi, this will be my first car and my budget is Rs. 10 lakhs for an automatic transmission. I am looking for a city car primarily with occasional long distance trips. Can you suggest a car that has smooth transmission within this budget and also has a decent after sale service but still it is not too expensive to maintain? I am okay with both hatchback and sub-4 meter SUV options if available.

For a first car under 10 lakh and a focus on city driving with occasional long trips, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT is the most sensible recommendation. It is a well-rounded hatchback with a smooth AMT gearbox, excellent fuel efficiency and low maintenance costs. Maruti’s service network is the strongest in the country, which keeps ownership hassle-free and affordable. The Baleno also offers a comfortable ride, a spacious cabin and enough boot space for weekend getaways.A strong alternative is the Hyundai i20. It comes with a CVT which is totally seamless and much smoother than the Maruti's AMT. It is also comfortable, easy to drive and Hyundai has a strong reputation for reliability and aftersales service. The Baleno strikes the best balance between smoothness, practicality and long-term ownership costs.
