    2020 Mahindra Thar garners over 15,000 bookings in 18 days

    The 2020 Mahindra Thar has garnered over 15,000 bookings in just 18 days, since it was launched on October 2. Now in its second generation, the Mahindra Thar 4x4 had gathered over 9,000 bookings within the first five days of its launch.

    A sub-Rs 10 lakh starting price has helped the new Thar attract a whole new section of customers. Mahindra claims 57 percent of the over 15,000 bookings for the Thar have come from first-time car buyers. In the 18 days since order books were opened, over 15,000 potential buyers have put down their money for the new Thar, with Mahindra receiving in excess of 65,000 enquiries for the 4x4 so far.

    Interest levels in Mahindra’s new-gen 4x4 have been high, even before it was unveiled, and the first unit of the 2020 Mahindra Thar was auctioned for a staggering Rs 1.11 crore. The proceeds from the auction will go to the Swades Foundation to aid its COVID-19 relief and recovery programme.

    2020 Mahindra Thar variants in demand

    The new Mahindra Thar is available in two main trim levels – the lower-spec AX and top-spec LX. Despite the significantly lower prices of the AX versions, it’s the higher-spec versions of the 2020 Mahindra Thar that are witnessing greater interest, with buyers opting for the convertible soft-top roof and automatic gearbox options. It has previously been confirmed that deliveries of the new Mahindra Thar will commence on November 1, 2020.

    The 2020 Mahindra Thar is based on a new ladder-frame chassis and comes with a choice of two new engines. There’s a 152hp, 2.0-litre 'mStallion' petrol,whichgets a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard anda 6-speed automaticas an option. The diesel engine for the new Thar is a 132hp, 2.2-litre mHawk unit, which is available with a 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Four-wheel-drive and a manual-shift transfer case are standard on all versions.

    The new Mahindra Thar’s interior features a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, roof-mounted speakers, a colour multi-info display for the instrument cluster, steering-mounted controls and cruise control. Safety kit includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, hill-start and descent assist, ESP with roll-over mitigation, and the new Thar also complies with upcoming pedestrian protection norms.

    The 2020 Mahindra Thar’s price range starts at Rs 9.80 lakh for the base AX petrol-manual and tops out at Rs 13.75 lakh for the fully-loaded LX diesel-automatic (all prices, ex-showroom).
