Does a plug-in hybrid combine an ICE and an EV? Can it run on the ICE for long journeys and as an EV for local driving? Which cars are available in this segment?

Yes, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is exactly that - a combination of an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor with a battery that can be charged from an external source. The idea is that you can use the electric-only mode for short local trips, and then the car seamlessly switches to the petrol engine for longer journeys, so you never have to worry about range. In India, however, the options are quite limited. You have the Mercedes S 450e at the top end as the only plug-in hybrid available at the moment. However, JSW MG is launching the MG Hector Tomahawk later this week, a plug-in hybrid, and next year you will get a Jetour T2-based SUV from JSW, also a plug-in hybrid. Other than these, there are no PHEV options for now.

Dear Autocar experts, I have tentatively decided to buy the Mahindra XUV 7X0 petrol AX7L AT as my next ride. To be frank, it is out of a lack of choice and options that I have made this decision in my head. In terms of capability, it is a downgrade, as I'm moving on from my beautiful Ford Endeavour 3.2 Titanium AT. Of course, it has a long list of bells and whistles that will be all new (and strange) to me. Being based in Delhi NCR, I am reluctant to go for a diesel again at this time. My driving in the city is quite minimal, say about 15kms max per day on average, but always in the clutches of peak Delhi traffic. I am terrified of BSVI diesel DPF horror stories. I am hoping that the 7X0 will be able to negotiate hills, mountain terrains and roads satisfactorily, as I make these trips quite frequently. I plan to keep this car for the next 4-5 years till India sorts out its fuel preferences and diktats, and fresh options are introduced that combine clean energy and performance along with the infrastructure to support them. Is my thought process sound? If not, please poke as many holes in it as you can.

Your plan seems sound for Delhi-NCR, because petrol dodges the 10-year diesel cap and DPF hassles, and your 15 km daily crawl will not punish petrol the way it would a BS6 diesel. The XUV 7XO petrol AT has strong performance and will certainly keep you satisfied while negotiating hill climbs. Sure, coming from an Endeavour 3.2, this will feel like a step down in terms of road presence and off-road ability. However, despite being a front-wheel drive monocoque, it still exudes an underlying toughness, which gives you ample confidence while dealing with rough terrain. Additionally, the tech and safety are up-to-date, and the three-row flexibility will come in handy, too, although boot space with all three rows in place is low. On the flipside, this petrol-AT is thirsty, so expect single-digit city fuel economy figures. If you aren't in a hurry, consider waiting for the Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid SUV that JSW is expected to launch in the latter half of this year. Sure, it'll be more expensive than the Mahindra, and it might not have the off-road capability of your outgoing Endeavour, but since you aren't fully convinced of the Mahindra, this could be worthy of your consideration.

Regarding the JSW Jetour T2 PHEV (380 hp variant), when the battery charge level drops to around 20%, how much power and torque does the vehicle deliver in real-world conditions? Please clarify.

There isn’t an official power or torque figure published for the JSW Jetour T2 PHEV (380 hp) at 20% battery, and this model is not officially on sale in India right now, so data here is limited. What you can expect in the real world is this: The headline 380 hp is the combined output when the engine and the electric motor work together with a healthy battery. At around 20% charge, most plug-in hybrids keep a small reserve so the motor can still help with quick starts and short bursts. But this JSW Motors car will not hold peak power for long. In steady driving or repeated hard pulls, output will feel much closer to the engine’s own power, and torque will drop as the motor’s boost is reduced. So, for a ballpark, look up the engine-only power and torque in the brochure - that is roughly what you’ll get once the battery is low, with a brief extra shove from the motor when you press hard.

Hi, I would like to know whether JSW will sell the Jetour T2 through existing MG dealerships, or will they wait to launch it after setting up a dedicated dealer network. I am keen to buy it early and am willing to wait for the launch.

JSW Motors Cars will begin selling the Jetour T2 through its own dealerships, not via MG showrooms. The company is aggressively setting up a dedicated dealer network and aims to have it ready in time for the Jetour T2’s launch. It is expected sometime between September and November this year. Also, keep in mind that, although this SUV is known globally as the Jetour T2 and will be JSW Auto’s first product here, it will not be sold under the Jetour name in India. It will carry a different market name and wear a JSW badge when it goes on sale.

What is the expected price of the upcoming JSW SUV based on the Jetour T2?

The Chery-based Jetour T2 will be the first product from JSW Auto, and it is expected sometime before the festive season this year. JSW Motors Cars is planning to launch the Jetour T2 with a fairly high spec, so it won't be cheap and is expected to cost around Rs 38-40 lakh. For that money, you get a 380hp plug-in hybrid variant with around 610 Nm of torque. It is larger than both the Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Tata Harrier/Safari in most dimensions and boasts a 580-litre boot. So if you are looking at the Jetour T2, you need to put aside a budget of Rs. 40 lakh
