Hi, I’m planning to buy an SUV under Rs 25 lakh. I’m considering the Nissan Tekton and the Hyundai Creta. However, since I can wait another 3-6 months, is it a good idea to wait for the next-generation Hyundai Creta before taking a decision? I’m looking at the Creta IVT option and am not interested in a strong hybrid.

If you can wait 3-6 months, it is worth waiting for the next-generation Hyundai Creta. Hyundai is expected to launch the all-new Creta in 2027, and it will be a completely new car on a new platform, not just a facelift. The current Creta is still a strong product, but it is nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the new model will likely bring significant improvements in design, technology and overall ownership experience. The Nissan Tekton is a good alternative and is a very good drivers car, so its a good buy if driving pleasure is high on your list. The new Creta is likely to be more of a relaxed commuter. Thus, if you can wait, it makes sense to see what the next-generation Creta has to offer before making a decision.

I want to buy an SUV in the Rs. 25 lakh price range. My primary concern is the size, with the maximum acceptable size being that of the new Kia Seltos, due to narrow streets and potholes. I have shortlisted the Kia Seltos because it has the wow factor, many features, and good build quality. After driving it, I didn't like the quality of the new Duster/Tekton. I have also eliminated Volkswagen/Skoda due to poor service in our area and their poor AC performance. The car will be chauffeur-driven and will run 5-8 km daily. I am not interested in EVs. I am also interested in second-hand luxury cars like the 2020 BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLC. What would you suggest? Should I go with the new Kia Seltos or consider these second-hand luxury car options? I really need your suggestion. I plan to keep the car for a minimum of 5 years.

Go for the new Kia Seltos. Your usage is just 5-8km a day, you are chauffeur-driven, and you want a car no bigger than the Seltos because of narrow streets and potholes. The Seltos fits that brief perfectly. It is a well-rounded SUV with a premium cabin, good ride comfort and a strong feature set. More importantly, it is a new car with a full warranty and predictable ownership costs, which matters over a five-year ownership period. The second-hand luxury car idea is tempting, but maintenance costs can be unpredictable. The Seltos will be easier to live with, cheaper to maintain and better suited to your daily routine. You have already ruled out the Duster/Tekton and VW/Skoda options, so the Seltos is the right choice. With limited running, the 1.5 NA petrol with either the IVT or the manual should suit you best. Just pick the variant that gives you the features you want without stretching the budget unnecessarily.

Hi, I am a regular reader of Autocar articles, and this time I thought of asking for some clarification. I have been using a 2022 Nissan Magnite CVT for the last 4 years, mostly for highway driving. I have noticed a significant drop in mileage after the introduction of E20 fuel, and I am doubtful about my vehicle's E20 compatibility. I checked with the dealer, but they simply said it is compatible with E20. However, the mileage drop I am experiencing, especially on highways, is quite significant. I am now planning to buy a new automatic SUV with good mileage. My budget is Rs. 17 lakh (on-road). Please advise.

Thank you for reading Autocar India and for your question. Your Magnite CVT is E20 compatible, so there is no need to worry about the engine. The drop in mileage of your Nissan car that you are seeing is normal. E20 petrol has a lower energy content than E10, so fuel efficiency drops by around 5-10%. This is expected and not a sign of a problem with the car.For your new car, your usage is mostly highway, and you want good mileage with an automatic within Rs. 17 lakh on-road budget. The best fit is the Maruti Suzuki Victoris mild hybrid automatic. It is a petrol mild hybrid, so it delivers better highway efficiency than a standard petrol, and the automatic is a smooth torque converter unit that is reliable and well suited to long-term ownership. The Victoris is also a comfortable and spacious SUV with a proven ownership record. If you want a more premium feel and a slightly more engaging driving experience, the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI automatic is a good alternative. It has a new 8-speed gearbox and the car feels more solid and planted on the highway. However, the Victoris will be the more efficient and easier car to own long term.If you are open to diesel, the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel automatic is worth considering. It will deliver the best highway efficiency and strong performance, but diesel makes sense only if your annual running is high enough to justify the higher fuel and maintenance costs.Overall, the Victoris mild hybrid automatic is the best fit for your requirements. It delivers good mileage, a smooth automatic and a hassle-free ownership experience.
