Nearly every mainstream Kia car in India today, from the Sonet to the range-topping Carens Clavis EV, fits within this budget. The only exceptions are the Carnival, EV6 and EV9, which sit well above what most of you in this bracket are looking to spend. This is also the first budget where you can compare almost the full Kia line-up side by side, not just a handful of variants across two or three cars. Two sub-4-metre SUVs, three MPVs, a mid-size SUV and two EVs are all “in budget” at once, including all of their top variants, which wasn’t the case with a 15 lakh budget.

So, the real question that comes up before you when choosing a Kia car under 30 lakh isn't about which extra features you can unlock. Instead, it's about which body style and powertrain from almost everything Kia sells is most appropriate for you, since money is no longer the main constraint.

What extra do Kia cars under Rs 25 lakh offer over the under Rs 20 lakh segment?

The Seltos' sportiest trims are now available for purchase. At Rs 20 lakh, you were largely limited to the HTX and GTX+ trims. But once you stretch your budget to 20 lakh, the GTX(A) and X-Line(A) automatic trims, along with the range-topping GTX(O) and X-Line(O) trims, get unlocked. These range-topping trims expand the ADAS suite from 21 to 28 autonomous features and add a head-up display, front and rear dashcams, and navigation on the digital driver's display.
All Carens Clavis trims are within reach. The HTX+, GTX+ and X-Line trims, with the 7-speed turbo-petrol DCT and the full 6-seat captain-chair layout, sit within this budget. This wasn’t the case when your budget was under 20 lakh.
The entire Carens Clavis EV range opens up. Below 20 lakh, only Carens Clavis EV HTK+ and HTX E variants were available for sale. But that’s not the case anymore. Now, you can choose from the HTX E 6 Seat variant to the range -topping variant, the X-Line ER 6 Seat, which comes exclusively with the larger 51.4 kWh Extended Range battery pack and an ARAI-certified (MIDC Full) driving range of 490 km on a single charge.

How safe are Kia cars under 25 lakh?

When it comes to safety, there isn’t much that changes at this budget, as no new model enters this budget. What’s added are just the higher variants of the same models. Therefore, the Seltos and Syros are the only 5-star Bharat NCAP-rated Kias on sale. The Sonet has received a 1-star Global NCAP adult protection rating, while the Carens has received 3-stars. The Carens Clavis, Syros EV and Carens Clavis EV have not yet been independently crash-tested.

The Carnival starts at Rs 59.65 lakh, the EV6 at Rs 65.98 lakh, and the EV9 at over Rs 1.30 crore (ex-showroom). These Kia cars are priced well outside the 30 lakh budget and hence not included in this budget.

It mainly depends on how many people you regularly carry. The Syros EV is a 4-meter SUV built for 4 or 5 with a tighter turning radius. Meanwhile, the Carens Clavis EV is a three-row MPV, and the only Kia EV with a usable third row in this budget, so it’s best for buyers who need occasional seven-seat capacity more than outright compact-city ease.

You should start by deciding what type of car best suits your needs rather than getting into features, as nearly every Kia now fits within this budget. A sub 4-meter SUv (Sonet and Syros) makes sense for easy city use, a mid-size SUV (Seltos) offers more space, a three-row MPV (Carens, Carens Clavis) is better suited for family duty, while an EV (Syros, Carens Clavis EV) makes sense if you have a reliable charging access. Once you have finalized the body style, the trim and powertrain choice narrows down considerably on its own.

Consider the Honda Elevate. It is a naturally aspirated petrol SUV with a manual gearbox, simple mechanicals and strong long-term ownership prospects. This Honda car is a good all-rounder, with a large boot (458 litres), a spacious cabin and Honda’s reputation for reliability. If you want an even larger boot, consider getting a three-row vehicle and keeping the third row folded. If you are open to this, consider the Kia Carens Clavis turbo-petrol manual or the Maruti Suzuki XL6. Both are spacious, comfortable and have bigger boots than mid-size SUVs. Kia and Maruti Suzuki also have strong reputations for aftersales service, so they should serve you well over 12 years.

Go for the Kia Seltos turbo petrol automatic. Coming from a Dzire, you will immediately notice the step up in comfort, refinement and overall premium feel. The Seltos offers a well-balanced package with a comfortable cabin, good rear seat space and a strong turbo petrol engine that delivers the performance you are looking for. The automatic gearbox is smooth and well suited to both city and highway driving, and Kia's service network is strong enough to make ownership relatively hassle-free.The Hyundai Creta is a very similar car mechanically, but the Seltos feels slightly more premium inside and offers marginally better rear seat space. The Tata Sierra is a genuinely interesting alternative with a spacious cabin and a comfortable ride, but it does not have the same long-term ownership track record as the Kia. Given your heavy usage, the majority of which is on the highway, we would recommend a diesel SUV. There are quite a few options in this price range, but we narrow it down to the Kia Seltos and the Tata Sierra. In your budget, you will get a mid-range diesel-manual variant of either of these SUVs, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. The Kia Seltos is the better all-rounder, with the more premium cabin, more refined and efficient diesel engine, as well as being easier to drive. The Tata Sierra, however, may feel like better value, thanks to its greater size and space, as well as more effortless diesel engine. Both are very comfortable, but for your largely highway use, the Sierra has the slight edge. With all these factors combined, we think the Tata Sierra Diesel MT is the best choice for you.
