Want a luxurious sedan and are not hung up on that badge on the bonnet? Then the Toyota Camry could be just the car for you. The latest Camry is large, comfortable and well-equipped, and its hybrid powertrain also gives it somewhat of a green image. It is surprisingly cheap to run but also surprisingly expensive to buy.

In sharp contrast to its conservatively styled predecessors, the eighth-gen Toyota Camry sports flamboyant styling that errs to the side of being overdone. It’s more conventional on the inside and the cabin is a well turned out space. There’s loads of room, material quality is impressive and the all-important rear seats are almost sofa-like in comfort. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is loaded with features too, including electric controls for the rear seat backrests. However, the touchscreen isn’t all that nice to use.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid is quiet, refined and makes for a relaxing car to drive or be driven in. The pure-electric mode, which is possible when there’s enough charge in the battery pack, brings down noise levels further. Performance from the 218hp hybrid powertrain is more than pleasant too and economy is small-car good. A cushy ride only ups the overall experience. The e-CVT gearbox does result in that rubber band effect when you drive the Camry with vigour. Then again, a sporty drive is not what you buy a Camry for.
