I have an 80km daily commute and am looking to buy an EV hatchback. Is the Tiago EV 24kWh sufficient, or should I wait and extend my budget to get the Punch EV 40kWh?

Verified

For an 80km daily commute, the Tata Tiago EV 24kWh is a sensible choice. It offers a real-world range of around 200km, which gives you enough buffer for your daily usage plus some margin for unexpected detours or battery degradation over time. This Tata car is also affordable, easy to park and cheap to run, making it a very practical city electric car.But if you can extend your budget, the Tata Punch EV 40kWh is the better car overall. It offers a significantly higher real-world range of around 300km, a slightly more spacious cabin and a more premium feel. The key question is whether you need that extra range. If your usage is mostly city-based and you have reliable home charging, the Tiago EV 24kWh is sufficient. If you regularly do longer trips or want maximum range buffer, then the Punch EV 40kWh is worth considering.

I already have a Maruti Baleno and want to buy a second car. I have shortlisted the Tata Tiago Pure Plus and the Tata Punch Pure Plus. Which one should I buy for mostly daily commuting in Delhi city?

Verified

Go for the Punch Pure Plus. Since you already have a Maruti Baleno, the Tata Punch makes more sense as a second car dedicated to daily city commuting in Delhi. It is compact, but has a higher seating position than the Tiago, which helps when manoeuvring in tight spaces and parking. It is also easier to get in and out of, and the cabin will feel roomier. The Tiago will be more fuel-efficient and less expensive, but overall the Punch is the more rounded vehicle between the two.

Hi! My wife is a dentist and currently drives a Dzire. Her hospital is nearby, and her average monthly running is less than 500km. We are planning a new car. We are considering the new 1.0 Brezza, the Punch EV, or even the Tiago EV because of uncertainty around petrol in the future. Our son wants a Creta or Seltos base model. I have a Hyryder base model. We are really confused about what to do.

Given your wife's usage of less than 500km a month and mostly short city runs, the Tata Punch EV is the more sensible choice here. It is a proven electric car with a compact footprint that's well-suited to the city, and the powertrain is smooth and refined. The Tiago EV is a good option too, but the Punch EV offers more space, comfort, features, range and ground clearance. And that too, for not a huge premium, and since it's in your budget, you should choose it. Plus, being an EV, running and maintenance costs are very low. Tata is the market leader in EVs, and its service stations are well geared to handle electric cars. The Brezza Turbo is a good option too, but feels unnecessary for your wife's intended usage. It's larger and not as easy to manoeuvre, and it's only available with a manual gearbox, which for short urban driving spells is not as easy as an automatic, which the EV is.It's for these same reasons the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta don't make sense here. Overall, since you have a larger car in the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, a compact EV like the Punch makes most sense. Just make sure you can have a wallbox charger installed at your home, as that is crucial to EV ownership in India.

I am confused between the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, and Tata Tiago Pure+ AMT. My usage will be low to moderate, including city driving as well as occasional highway drives, and I am a first-time car buyer and driver. Based on my driving requirements, should I consider a CNG variant or stick to my original plan of buying a petrol car? Please help me choose the best car in this price range and also suggest any other suitable alternatives available.

For a first-time buyer with low to moderate city and highway use, stick to a petrol car. Our recommendation will be the Maruti Swift AMT over the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT. Your running does not justify the added cost and compromises of a CNG car, and the Maruti Swift strikes the best balance for your needs. This Maruti Suzuki car is easy to drive, has a smooth and refined petrol engine, a comfortable ride and a well-built, practical cabin. The AMT is one of the smoother units in the segment, making it a confidence-inspiring choice for a new driver. This Hyundai car isn't as good as the Swift when it comes to ride comfort and even rear seat space. The Tata Tiago AMT is the value pick, but the cabin and overall refinement are not at the same level. That said, if you want a slightly larger and more premium feeling car, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT is also worth considering, but it will stretch the budget. If you don't want to stretch the Swift is the most well-rounded and easiest car to live with in this range.

I am confused between the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, and Tata Tiago Pure+ AMT. As a first-time buyer and driver with very low to moderate city and highway use, please help me choose the best car. Also, based on my usage, should I consider a CNG car or stick to my original plan of buying a petrol car? Please also suggest any better alternative available in this price range.

For a first-time buyer with low-to-moderate city and highway use, the Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT is the best fit. It is an easy car to drive in the city, with light steering, smooth AMT and a very user-friendly nature that makes it ideal for new drivers. The cabin is well finished, the ride is comfortable, and Maruti's service network is strong, which adds to long-term peace of mind. The Hyundai i10 Nios has a slightly more refined engine, but it is not as efficient as the Swift, and the cabin is not as spacious either. The Tata Tiago Pure Plus AMT is the value pick, but the powertrain is the least refined of the three and Tata’s service consistency is still not as strong as Hyundai or Maruti. On CNG, it only makes sense if your running is high enough to justify the higher upfront cost and lower boot space. For low to moderate use, petrol is the better choice. If you want a slightly larger car, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT is a solid choice for not a lot more money, but overall the Swift AMT is the most balanced and easiest car to live with for a first-time buyer.
