I have an 80km daily commute and am looking to buy an EV hatchback. Is the Tiago EV 24kWh sufficient, or should I wait and extend my budget to get the Punch EV 40kWh?

For an 80km daily commute, the Tata Tiago EV 24kWh is a sensible choice. It offers a real-world range of around 200km, which gives you enough buffer for your daily usage plus some margin for unexpected detours or battery degradation over time. This Tata car is also affordable, easy to park and cheap to run, making it a very practical city electric car.

But if you can extend your budget, the Tata Punch EV 40kWh is the better car overall. It offers a significantly higher real-world range of around 300km, a slightly more spacious cabin and a more premium feel. The key question is whether you need that extra range.

If your usage is mostly city-based and you have reliable home charging, the Tiago EV 24kWh is sufficient. If you regularly do longer trips or want maximum range buffer, then the Punch EV 40kWh is worth considering.

Looking to buy a new EV in the Rs 24-25 lakh range. I have shortlisted the Tata Sierra EV and VinFast VF7. My expected running is around 1,200km per month, with about 75% city use. Which of these is more likely to offer a fuss-free experience in terms of running and service? I am not too bothered about features, but safety and reliability are important. Go for the Tata Sierra EV. With your running of 1,200 km monthly and 75% city usage, an EV makes perfect sense, and the Sierra EV is the safer ownership choice. Tata has a well-established EV service network, proven battery and motor technology, and a strong track record with the Nexon EV and Punch EV. The Sierra EV also offers a spacious cabin, comfortable ride and good range for your daily needs.VinFast is still new in India, and while the VF7 is an interesting product, the long-term service and support ecosystem is still unproven. Since you are not chasing features and prioritise reliability and safety, the Tata electric car is the more sensible and fuss-free choice.

I am planning to buy a EV as my primary car for me and my family. I am confused between Tata Punch and Tata Nexon considering my daily running will be approximately between 40-50 km. Please suggest which one should I choose.

Go for the Tata Punch EV. With a daily running of 40-50km, an electric car makes perfect sense, and the Punch EV is the newer of the two and has the latest integrated drivetrain which promises better reliability. The lower range would not make a difference to you given your low daily running. Do note though that rear space is less than the Nexon EV so if you have a family of 5, you would be better off in the Nexon.

The Tata Punch EV with the 40kWh battery is a good choice for intercity driving, provided your typical trips are within a 200-250km range. The larger battery pack gives it a usable real-world range, but an electric car is inherently less efficient on the highway, so you may need to adjust your driving style or plan charging stops accordingly. Considering that you live in Pune, a drive to Mumbai is easily possible on one charge, but you will need to charge it in Mumbai for the return journey. If you regularly travel with a full load, then too the range will drop significantly.The Punch EV is also a well-packaged car with a comfortable ride, good ground clearance and a compact footprint, which makes it easy to live with both in the city and on highways. Performance is also good, so highway overtakes are not an issue.Overall, the Punch EV 40kWh is a sensible choice for intercity driving, but make sure your typical trip distances and charging options align with what the car can comfortably deliver.

For your usage, the Skoda Kylaq is a good upgrade. Your 65 km daily expressway run means you need a car that is stable at speed and comfortable over long distances. The Kylaq delivers that very well. At your budget, you could get a lower-spec automatic, which would make it easy to drive in city traffic, which matters for your twice-a-month urban runs. The automatic gearbox is a torque converter, so its shifts are very smooth and it is very reliable too. The only possible downside is that fuel efficiency is not going to be very high, and given your high daily running, this is something that might bother you. If so, opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx 1.2L, which is also good at higher speeds and would be more fuel efficient. The auto box in this case is an AMT, which would not be as smooth, but this would only be a bit of a bother in city traffic and not on steady highway cruising.

Hey, We are planning to buy a sub-4-metre SUV, and our main requirement is good suspension for Bengaluru’s pothole-filled roads, especially as my wife is pregnant. We have shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Tata Nexon. Which one would you recommend for our requirements? I was also considering a larger SUV like the Honda Elevate, but a well-equipped variant costs around Rs. 18 lakh on-road, which is beyond my budget. Could you suggest some good options in both categories? I can stretch my budget up to around Rs. 15 lakh on-road if required.

Given your priorities, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is the best fit. It has the most comfortable ride in the segment, with a suspension that deals with broken roads and potholes better than the Brezza or Nexon. The wide rear seat and good cabin space will also make a difference for your wife and family. The Brezza is the more reliable long-term ownership proposition, but its ride is not as plush as the 3XO. The Nexon is a good all-rounder, but the 3XO has the edge on ride comfort and rear seat space.On the Honda Elevate, it is a solid, reliable SUV with a comfortable ride, but at Rs 18 lakh on-road for the well-equipped variants, it is not worth stretching your budget for. The 3XO gives you a better ride and more features for less money.Overall, the 3XO is the best balance of ride comfort, space and value for your requirements. Go for the petrol automatic variant for the smoothest city driving experience.

I have been using Honda City manual for the last 21 years. Now, I want a car with automatic transmission for city running mostly. My average running is around 1000km a month. Can you suggest whether I should buy Seltos, Creta, Kushaq or Elevate?

Given your usage of around 1,000 km a month, mostly in the city, the priority should be a smooth and reliable automatic transmission, good ride comfort and ease of ownership. The Kia Seltos IVT is the most natural recommendation here. The IVT gearbox is also very smooth, and the Seltos feels more premium and feature-rich than the competition. Alternatively, consider the Honda Elevate. The CVT is exceptionally smooth in stop-start traffic, Honda’s ownership experience is proven, and the car is simple, reliable and easy to live with.The Skoda Kushaq is the driver’s choice, with a more engaging driving experience, but in city running, that doesn't matter much. The Hyundai Creta is a good all-rounder, but it is due for a full model change in 2027, which makes the Seltos and Elevate stronger recommendations at this point.
