My preferences are reliability, performance, and softer suspension. I am 5′7″ tall and upgrading from a Hornet 160R to a more fun bike under ₹3 lakh. My commute is 95 % Mumbai traffic, so I need a reliable performer with excellent suspension to handle bad roads. I want a bike that cruises effortlessly and offers significantly better comfort than my current ride.

Within your budget, you should look at bikes like the TVS Ronin, Royal Enfield Hunter 350, Honda CB350 and Triumph Speed 400. Of these four, the Speed 400 will be the fastest, but it also offers a good level of comfort and usability for daily use. Its tractable engine, short gearing and light clutch will make it a good city companion.

The other three bikes are more relaxed in their nature but will still offer a tangible step up from your old Hornet 160, especially in the comfort they offer you.

Take a test ride of these bikes to see which one suits your riding style best before making a decision.

I live in Pune and have a daily commute of around 60 km (50% highway). I currently commute by car, but now want to buy a motorcycle for the same commute, not to save on fuel but to fulfil a long-time desire to own a good bike. I also go on weekend drives occasionally and plan to go on rides once I buy the motorcycle. My budget is Rs 5 to 6 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

Since you have said you've always aspired to own a motorcycle and have a commute that involves some highway sections, looking at a 400cc bike would be recommended. In this class, the Triumph Speed / Scrambler 400 X, Royal Enfield Guerrilla / Himalayan 450 and KTM 390 Duke would be our recommendation.
Of these, the Triumph 400s are the most friendly to ride and also make for the best city machines. The RE 450s are a 'jack of all trades' sort of machines, while the KTM 390s are likely to put the biggest smile on your face with their punchy, engaging performance.
A test ride of these bikes should help you make an informed decision.

Hi, I commute daily from Vashi to Dadar, covering around 50 km to and fro. Riding an aggressive bike like the R15 makes the commute stressful and causes severe body pain. I am planning to buy a new bike in the 400cc segment to make daily travel easier. I may also use it for short weekend tours. My budget is Rs 3 lakh, and my height is 5 feet 9 inches. I am confused between the Triumph Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X. Which would suit my needs better? If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Between the two bikes you are considering, both will be more than up to the job of handling your daily commute as well as the occasional weekend trip. Both the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X are powered by the same 40hp, 398cc engine and have similar levels of comfort. What you need to consider is that the Scrambler is a little heavier and has a rather tall 835mm seat height, which might not be comfortable in big city traffic.
In this same segment, you should also look at the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, which has similar performance but feels a little more sporty compared to the Speed 400. A test ride of all three is in order so you can decide which is the best option for you.

Hello, currently I have jupiter 125 disc scooty. My commute can go in range from 20-70 km in bangalore. I want to purchase a bike with a budget of 4-4.5 lakh. Please suggest me a bike and also I am 6'2" And prefer to go on weekend trip every 2nd weekend,

In the price range you're looking at, there are a variety of options in different body styles, so we'll list them out for you. If you want a sporty road bike, then options like the KTM 390 Duke, Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and Triumph Speed 400 are the way to go. Do bear in mind that the KTM can feel quite cramped for taller riders and, over longer stints in the saddle, this will become even more pronounced.

If you are leaning toward an adventure bike, you should be looking at the TVS Apache RTX 300, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and KTM 390 Adventure models. The RTX will feel the slowest because of its smaller displacement, and it also weighs 180kg.

Since you have a long commute from time to time and are a taller person, we would recommend you steer clear of sportbikes and cruisers. Also, stick to roadsters or adventure bikes, as they will be more comfortable.

A test ride of the above mentioned options - and anything else you may shortlist - will help you decide which bike is right for you.

Hi Team, I’m looking to buy a new two-wheeler. Given my daily usage of 7-10 km with occasional city rides. Practicality points me towards a scooter (Jupiter/Activa), but my heart goes out for a bike. I have been owning an FZ16 (since 2009) and have also owned a Classic 500 F. Will it make sense to buy a Triumph 400 series or any similar machine? As I am not sure how a scooter feels, as I have always been riding a bike. Thanks.

Since you're familiar with a motorcycle and are unsure of how a scooter will feel, you can stick with a bike for your next purchase. While scooters are inherently more practical, with a bit of careful planning, you can execute most similar tasks on a motorcycle as well.
The Triumph Speed T4 and Speed 400 would be the most city-friendly machines among the 400cc Triumph bikes on offer, owing to their lower seat heights and punchy engines. If at all you decide to go for a scooter, then we would recommend you take a look at the Suzuki Access, TVS Jupiter 110/125, and Honda Activa 110/125 models.
Whichever option you shortlist, make sure to take a proper test ride before buying.

I am 32 years old and have ridden commuter motorcycles and scooters all my life — such as the Splendor+, Platina, TVS Zest, Access 125, and Vespa ZX. I don’t feel comfortable riding above 60 km/h on the highway due to engine vibrations and braking limitations. I’m now looking for a bike in the 350 cc to 400 cc range with a maximum budget of ₹3 lakh. Reliability and good service quality are important factors for me. Please help.

If you want something with a bit of sporting intent in the way it rides, the Triumph Speed 400 makes for a good purchase. It is a relaxed city commuter with good suspension, a smooth and grunty engine, as well as an agile demeanour. If you want a more mellow riding experience but want a Triumph, the Speed T4 makes a good case for itself.

If you want bikes with a more old-school riding experience, then the Honda CB350 models and the Royal Enfield Bullet / Classic / Hunter 350 models deserve your attention.

All bikes here have been out for multiple years now and have largely proven themselves to be reliable machines.

A test ride of these bikes will help you decide which one suits you the best.

I want to buy a bike mainly for city use (around 90%). My budget is under ₹3 lakh. I am looking for a good-looking bike with a comfortable suspension. Please advise.

Within your budget, bikes like the TVS Ronin, Royal Enfield Hunter/Bullet/Classic, Triumph Speed 400, Harley-Davidson X440, as well as the Honda CB350 models, will make for a good fit in the neo-retro roadster segment. If you want something that's a little more rugged, then ADV bikes like the TVS Apache RTX 300, Hero Xpulse 210, and KTM 250 Adventure deserve your attention.
A test ride of all these should help you decide which is the best option for your usage as well as your physique.

My height is 5 feet 7 inches. I am looking for a bike between 300cc and 450cc with good suspension and a refined engine. My riding will mostly be within the city.

In this category, bikes like the Royal Enfield Hunter/Bullet/Classic 350, Triumph Speed 400, Harley Davidson X440 and the Honda CB350 models are worth considering. The Honda and RE 350s will have a relaxed, laidback riding experience while the Triumph 400 will feel noticeably more eager - although its not going to be overenthusiastic like a KTM 390. Do take test rides of your shortlisted options to see which one suits you best.

I have a 2011 Karizma ZMR that I love for its trouble-free and reliable performance, and I’ve ridden it across South India making great memories. Now I want to buy a new bike because this one has aged, though it is still in good shape. I want a large, reliable bike similar to the Karizma. I like Japanese bikes and also Honda 350, and I find the Triumph appealing. My budget is ₹3-3.5 lakh on road in Bangalore. Please recommend suitable bikes.

The Honda CB350 models you are looking at are comfortable, reliable and decently fuel-efficient bikes which will last you a long time without any major troubles, by and large. Pick the one you like the look of the most or the one that's the most affordable, depending on your preference, because all three are largely mechanically very similar.

The Triumph Speed 400 is also a great bike, but it has a much higher performance ceiling and will feel like a step up in terms of performance and handling. If that is the sort of experience you are after, it makes sense to go with the Triumph.

A test ride of both will help you figure out which is better for you.

Hi Autocar, I currently ride a Yamaha FZ and want to replace it with a Triumph Speed 400, but the problem is that the Triumph dealership is not in my city (Bathinda). My question is: should I purchase it from a dealership located about 130 km away? Will it be a sensible choice considering service and maintenance?

The Triumph Speed 400 is a largely reliable machine with few sporadic cases of big failures reported in the 2.5 years. It has been on sale, so by and large, you won't need to visit the service centre very often. Additionally, its long 16,000km / 1 year service interval means that unless you ride a lot, you only need to service it once a year - after the first service, at least.

However, if something should go wrong, not having an authorised service centre nearby will be troublesome. You should speak to the dealership if a mechanic will be willing to visit your residence to service it. Otherwise, you have to transport it to the authorised workshop every time something like this occurs.

Ideally, we would recommend buying a machine that has a dealership and service presence in your hometown and close to your residence or office.
