The KTM 250 Duke is a naked street motorcycle powered by a 249.07cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, making 31hp and 25Nm and paired with a 6-speed gearbox. It has an 800mm seat height, 162.8kg kerb weight and 176mm ground clearance. The current bike gets a 5-inch colour TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation, a bidirectional Quickshifter+, Supermoto ABS and all-LED lighting.

In our road test, the 250 Duke's biggest strength came out to be a combination of its performance and agility. The engine feels relatively calm below 5,000rpm but becomes much stronger above 6,000rpm, while the light chassis and strong brakes make it quick to change direction. Its firm seats and relatively short seat-to-foot peg distance can be an issue for taller riders, while the suspension can feel soft when pushed hard.

Who should buy the KTM 250 Duke?

You can go through the below table to understand what makes KTM 250 Duke suitable for you:

Buyer type

Why it fits

Performance Buyer

The 31hp engine comes alive above 6,000rpm, with 0-100kph taking 7.89sec in our test.

City Rider

At 162.8kg, the 250 Duke is relatively light, and its quick steering makes it easy to change direction in traffic.

Highway Rider

Autocar found it smooth at 100-110kph, while the 15-litre tank and 37kpl test efficiency gave it a range of over 400km.

Tech Buyer

The current bike gets a 5-inch TFT, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, bidirectional Quickshifter+ and Supermoto ABS.

First Big-Bike Buyer

The 800mm seat is more approachable than the taller alternatives in KTM's range, while the 31hp engine provides a clear step up from smaller motorcycles.

Tall Rider

As per our road test, the seat-to-footpeg distance is cramped for a 5ft 11in rider. An optional taller seat raises seat height to 820mm.

KTM 250 Duke Mileage

KTM 250 Duke mileage is around 30.08kpl as an ARAI figure, while our own road test returned 37kpl overall. Our highway testing also recorded up to 38.9kpl, and the 15-litre tank means a real-world range of more than 400km is possible when ridden efficiently.

There is only one variant, so mileage does not change with the trim. Riding style will have a much bigger effect, particularly because the engine delivers its stronger performance higher up the rev range. We found that its motor is relatively docile below 5,000rpm and much more eager above 6,000rpm, so riders using the upper half of the rev range frequently should expect lower efficiency.

KTM 250 Duke FAQs

The KTM 250 Duke may feel slightly cramped for taller riders on longer journeys because of the distance between seat and foot pegs making the knees more bent. However, there is an optional taller seat available that increases the seat height from 800 mm to 820 mm to help taller riders find a more comfortable riding position.

KTM Duke 250 comes with an off-centre WP Apex rear monoshock that helps absorb bumps and uneven road surfaces. Further, its 176mm ground clearance also makes it suitable for roads with potholes.

The KTM 250 Duke can cruise comfortably at speeds of around 110 kph with few vibrations felt at around 120 kph, thus, making it suitable for long highway rides.

Supermoto ABS is a riding mode that keeps ABS active on the front wheel while disabling it on the rear wheel. This allows experienced riders to lock the rear wheel for better control during closed-course or track riding.

Hi, I’m planning to buy a new bike during Dussehra and am confused between the R15 and Xtreme. I really like both R15 and Xtreme and feel that either could be used for touring. However, I’m hesitant about the R15 because I’ve seen reviews mentioning that its light weight can affect highway handling and that it may not be ideal on steep inclines. At the same time, we know the R15 can be taken on tours, whereas I’m not sure whether the Xtreme would be equally suitable for touring. We also know that Splendor is reliable. I had also shortlisted the XMR 210 and really liked it, but it is out of production. So, should I go for the R15 or Xtreme?

Verified

In theory, with enough determination and some out-of-the-box thinking, you could take any two-wheeler on a long-distance tour. The Yamaha R15 is a sorted, proven supersport but as a tourer, it will leave you wanting in more than one area. On the other hand, the Hero Xtreme 250R packs in lovely handling with comfy ergos and absorptive suspension which will certainly help you cover longer distances in greater comfort. The Xtreme's larger engine is also punchier and will be less stressed at highway speeds than the R15's. However, as you pointed out, the Hero's reliability has been rather patchy and it seems to be a sporadic issue depending on the unit. If you can go to your nearest Hero dealer and get some assurances about the reliability of the Xtreme as well as a good roadside assistance package then perhaps you should consider it. However, if you aren't convinced look for similar options from KTM 200 Duke or 250 Duke or even the Yamaha MT-15 and XSR155 which will all be sporty, yet comfortable machines that are reliable and can be taken touring without a second thought.

I’m planning to upgrade from an Apache 200 after 9 years. My usage is primarily within Bangalore city, with occasional highway trips. I’m confused between the KTM Duke 250, which seems like an agile city option with good tech, the Scrambler 350X, and the KTM Adventure 350. The Scrambler 350X is my first choice, followed by the KTM Adventure 350. However, I feel I might be wasting the larger engines if I’m mostly riding in heavy city traffic. For my usage, should I stick with the Duke 250, or would it make sense to move to one of the bigger options?

We'd recommend you go with the 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X over the other bikes you've shortlisted for two reasons. First, it will offer you a big step up in comfort and performance from your Apache 200. Second, despite using a larger engine, this Triumph bike is a very friendly city bike and won't catch you out with abrupt, overeager power delivery or a heavy clutch. The 350cc KTM 390 Adventure has a very buzzy engine which will make its presence felt at all times and the KTM 250 Duke will feel like a small step up from your Apache 200.

I’m 38 years old and 5'6" tall. I’ve been riding a Honda Shine 125 for about a decade and now want to upgrade to a bigger bike. I really like the Triumph Speed 400, but I’ve heard that its maintenance costs can be high. I’m also considering the Bajaj Dominar 400, Pulsar NS200, and Royal Enfield Classic 350. Please help me choose the right bike based on my requirements. I’m also open to other suggestions. I plan to keep the bike for at least 8 years, so long-term reliability and maintenance costs are important to me.

Since you are going to keep your next purchase for a long time and are coming from a Shine, we'd advise you to consider with the Royal Enfield Classic 350. The Classic is a simple, fuss-free motorcycle which should be easy and inexpensive to maintain. This Royal Enfield bike will also offer you a step up in terms of comfort, features and road presence from your Shine although, expectedly, its fuel efficiency will be lower owing to its larger engine. If you want something sportier, then consider the KTM 250 Duke. The quarter-litre Duke has approachable yet exciting performance and will allow you to grow into it as time passes. This KTM bike has great handling, cool tech like a colour TFT display and bidirectional quickshifter and its zingy engine can also be rather fuel efficient with sensible riding. These are two starkly different machines and depending on your preferences, pick between them. A test ride of both should help you decide which one is right for you.

I am planning to buy a KTM Duke. Initially, I considered the 250 because the 390 feels scary, and I am not ready for that yet. But with the new Duke, I'm confused between the two. Can you help me with this?

Verified
•6w

The 350cc KTM 390 Duke finds a good middle ground between the 399cc 390 Duke R and the smaller 250 Duke in terms of outright power. Even though it has over 40hp, this engine is rather peaky which means you won't be accessing all of the peak output very often - helpful for a newer rider. In terms of features and electronics too, the 390 Duke is much better equipped compared to the 250 Duke. Overall, the 350cc Duke is a machine that you will be able to enjoy for a longer time as you progress as a rider.

I am a third-year college student, and I've always wanted a bike. My dream bike is the KTM Duke 390, but I've settled on the Duke 250 because it seems easier to own. I will have to ask my parents to buy it for me, and I feel guilty about that, but I also can't let go of the dream of owning a KTM. My parents have set a budget of Rs. 2 lakh, while the Duke 250 costs around Rs. 2.7 lakh. Is it worth stretching the budget? Also, what is the best lower-capacity bike that offers an aggressive performance like a KTM? I don't like the Yamaha R15 because the riding position feels too cramped.

Verified
•12w

At some point in our lives, we were all in your shoes, and no matter which motorcycle you get, it's going to be a fun road ahead! First things first, since your budget is Rs 2 lakh, why not consider the 350cc Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z? This bike will give you more performance than any other machine at this price point, and it's an exciting and engaging machine without being too cramped and uncomfortable. The NS400Z's on road price is also likely to cross the Rs 2 lakh mark, but it will well undercut the Rs 2.70 lakh asking price of the KTM 250 Duke.
