Aprilia RS 457 expert review
We like
Impressive exhaust note
Engaging handling and agility
We don't like
Brake fade under heavy use
Expensive, no standard quickshifter
9.0
The Aprilia RS 457 looks and feels like a much bigger motorcycle and takes strong inspiration from the RS 660. It has styling that stands out from every angle, although the exhaust looks unfinished compared to the rest of the bike. The switchgear and other parts feel high quality, but the direction buttons do not feel tactile enough, especially while wearing gloves. The TFT display is crisp and well laid out, though there were occasional glitches with button response and a few display pixels while showing messages. Apart from these small issues, the motorcycle feels well put together and premium overall.
7.0
The riding position is more aggressive than its Japanese rivals, but it is still not as uncomfortable as a Yamaha R15. The RS 457 feels more committed to performance and has a sporty sense of occasion. The seats are firm but not overly harsh, and the bike is comfortable enough for commuting as well as weekend rides. The suspension handles broken roads reasonably well at lower speeds, but at higher speeds over rough surfaces, the firm seat, suspension and leaned-forward ergonomics can feel tiring. Heat management is also impressive, as the cooling system keeps temperatures under control even in heavy traffic and hot conditions.
9.0
The RS 457 delivers fiery performance and strong acceleration. It reaches triple-digit speeds effortlessly, with 120-130kph feeling smooth and relaxed. The engine feels refined, with only a mild tingle in the footpegs at high rpm. The gearbox is smooth enough, though slightly clunky in feel, and the lack of a standard quickshifter is noticeable. The parallel-twin engine has a distinctive bark and growl thanks to its 270-degree firing order, along with small pops and cracks on downshifts.
Fuel efficiency in city traffic was low at 17.03kpl, but highway efficiency improved to 32.52kpl. Even when ridden briskly, the bike can realistically manage around 220-240km on a tankful.
9.0
The RS 457 feels sharp and confidence inspiring, with excellent chassis composure even over undulations at triple-digit speeds. Aprilia’s suspension and chassis setup deliver a balance between sporty handling and street usability. The motorcycle feels stable, agile and rewarding while cornering, without becoming too hardcore for daily use.
The braking setup performs strongly in most situations and delivered some of the best stopping results in the segment, helped by the sharp front brake and TVS Eurogrip Protorq Extreme tyres. However, repeated hard use can lead to brake fade, especially during track riding or aggressive downhill riding.
7.0
The RS 457 gets Bluetooth-enabled call and music controls through the Aprilia app, along with turn-by-turn navigation powered by Here Maps. Call alerts display neatly on the TFT screen, although navigation occasionally misses addresses or blanks out guidance arrows. The bike also gets three riding modes: Sport, Eco and Rain, which adjust throttle response. The clutch is extremely light and easy to use in traffic.
9.0
Priced between Rs 4.22 lakh and Rs 4.37 lakh (ex-showroom), the RS 457 delivers an experience that feels very close to a bigger superbike at a relatively accessible price. It combines exotic styling, strong performance, sharp handling and a premium feel into one package. While there are a few shortcomings like the missing quickshifter and brake fade under hard use, they are either easy to fix or easy to overlook. The RS 457 succeeds in making every ride feel special.

•8wI want to buy a bike with more than 46 bhp, and my budget is between ₹5-6 lakh. Could you please suggest some suitable options?

Autocar India
To get a motorcycle making more than 46hp within your budget, you can consider any of the Royal Enfield 650cc models, as well as the Aprilia RS and Tuono 457 models. Royal Enfield's 650s aren't sporty machines and are also considerably heavy, with some of them weighing 240kg or more. The Aprilia 457 models are properly thrilling and entertaining machines to ride, but have been plagued by some troubling engine reliability issues. It would be advisable to speak to some RS and Tuono 457 owners to see what their experience has been before pulling the trigger on either of the two. Lastly, the Kawasaki Ninja 500 is another option that fits the bill, and truthfully, it is a great bike to ride, but its steep pricing is a tough pill to swallow.Do your research, take multiple test rides and speak to people who own these bikes before you make your choice.

•20wHello, I am planning to buy a sports-faired bike in the 500 cc range for mostly city riding and occasional highway use. Should I consider the Ninja 500 or Aprilia 457, or wait for the CBR 500 or another upcoming bike in the next 3-4 months? If none of the above are suitable for city riding (Bangalore), should I consider the Ninja 300 or Apache 310?

Autocar India
The Kawasaki Ninja 500 is a great sportsbike at a very steep price, just like its predecessor, the Ninja 400. If you can stretch for the Ninja, it is a capable, refined, comfortable and reliable machine which will serve you well. Do bear in mind that Kawasaki spares and service have a reputation for being on the pricey side and that the company's dealer network is quite small across the country. The Aprilia RS 457 is a truly great sportsbike, but because of its focused nature, it won't be the best fit on broken city roads. Another aspect to consider is that the 457cc engine has been reported to have multiple reliability issues that keep recurring. So, we would recommend you not go with the RS.The Honda CBR500R is not sold in India, so it shouldn't factor into your decision. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 is a machine that thoroughly feels its age today, but remains a unique offering in the class with its twin-cylinder engine. The single-cylinder TVS Apache RR 310 will feel quite dull to ride in comparison to these twin-cylinder machines. But it is also much more affordable and easier to maintain. Take a test ride to decide which bike is better for you.

•22wI am choosing between the Aprilia RS 457 and the KTM RC 390. I prefer the Aprilia’s design, but at 6’2”, I am concerned it may feel compact. After-sales support also seems mixed. The RC 390 is around ₹1.6 lakh cheaper, offers similar performance, and has a proven service network. Is the Aprilia worth the premium? Also, with rumours of an RC 450 or 490, should I wait? My usage will be weekend rides, city fun, and occasional touring.

Autocar India
The Aprilia RS 457 is a wonderful sportbike and is great fun to ride while also being desirable to own and look at. However, there's no escaping that the 457cc Aprilia engine has sadly been in the spotlight many times for reliability and various other issues highlighted by multiple owners.Apart from all this, Aprilia's dealer network is quite small, and spares are quite pricey. So we would recommend you stick with the dated but more affordable, proven and capable KTM RC 390.The RC will also be more spacious and comfortable for larger riders such as yourself. Coming to the KTM RC 450, that bike is highly unlikely to come to India as it is made by CFMoto, not Bajaj.
