Hello, I am planning to buy a sports-faired bike in the 500 cc range for mostly city riding and occasional highway use. Should I consider the Ninja 500 or Aprilia 457, or wait for the CBR 500 or another upcoming bike in the next 3-4 months? If none of the above are suitable for city riding (Bangalore), should I consider the Ninja 300 or Apache 310?

The Kawasaki Ninja 500 is a great sportsbike at a very steep price, just like its predecessor, the Ninja 400. If you can stretch for the Ninja, it is a capable, refined, comfortable and reliable machine which will serve you well. Do bear in mind that Kawasaki spares and service have a reputation for being on the pricey side and that the company's dealer network is quite small across the country.

The Aprilia RS 457 is a truly great sportsbike, but because of its focused nature, it won't be the best fit on broken city roads. Another aspect to consider is that the 457cc engine has been reported to have multiple reliability issues that keep recurring. So, we would recommend you not go with the RS.

The Honda CBR500R is not sold in India, so it shouldn't factor into your decision.

The Kawasaki Ninja 300 is a machine that thoroughly feels its age today, but remains a unique offering in the class with its twin-cylinder engine. The single-cylinder TVS Apache RR 310 will feel quite dull to ride in comparison to these twin-cylinder machines. But it is also much more affordable and easier to maintain.

I am choosing between the Aprilia RS 457 and the KTM RC 390. I prefer the Aprilia’s design, but at 6’2”, I am concerned it may feel compact. After-sales support also seems mixed. The RC 390 is around ₹1.6 lakh cheaper, offers similar performance, and has a proven service network. Is the Aprilia worth the premium? Also, with rumours of an RC 450 or 490, should I wait? My usage will be weekend rides, city fun, and occasional touring.

The Aprilia RS 457 is a wonderful sportbike and is great fun to ride while also being desirable to own and look at. However, there's no escaping that the 457cc Aprilia engine has sadly been in the spotlight many times for reliability and various other issues highlighted by multiple owners.

Apart from all this, Aprilia's dealer network is quite small, and spares are quite pricey. So we would recommend you stick with the dated but more affordable, proven and capable KTM RC 390.

The RC will also be more spacious and comfortable for larger riders such as yourself. Coming to the KTM RC 450, that bike is highly unlikely to come to India as it is made by CFMoto, not Bajaj.

I’m 5'4" tall and an extremely skinny person. I want to replace my 2015 Honda Dio with something more powerful and fun to ride. My daily office commute is around 20 km, with occasional short weekend rides. I really like the Ather 450 series, but it’s a bit of a stretch for me due to the battery warranty and Pro Pack cost. I also liked the new Ntorq 150. Is it worth spending extra for the Ather in my case? Should I consider any other scooters?

Considering that you come from a Honda Dio and are looking at sporty scooter options, we'll recommend only those that fit within this box. The Ather 450X is a superb offering, even all these years later, and if you do want an Ather 450 but can't quite digest the 450X's high price, it's worth taking a look at the Ather 450S because it packs in very similar performance, features, and range at a significantly lower price. That's about the only sporty electric scooter we would recommend currently.

In the petrol scooter space, the TVS Ntorq 150 is a great option that is also well-priced. Another option you could also consider is the Aprilia SR 175, which is a more focused sporty scooter but is less practical and also has a rather limited dealer reach, so do bear that in mind.
