Patent applications reveal that Indian Motorcycle is working on a radar system for its motorcycles.

  • The system will enable adaptive cruise control

  • It even features cameras and sensors at the rear

  • Expected to be on offer as early as next year

Radar systems are the next big thing when it comes to electronics on motorcycles. Ducati was the first company to introduce it on a production motorcycle with the Multistrada V4 and since then it has made it to a few other bikes as well. Like Ducati, the Indian’s radar system won’t only be used for adaptive cruise control. The American motorcycle company wants to use it to keep an eye on vehicles behind and to the sides of it.

Indian is incorporating a number of sensors and cameras including ones to the rear. Along with the camera facing directly behind, there are also wide angle lenses fitted on the edges of the panniers to cover as much of the rear as possible. These cameras will project any obstacles on the TFT display. Additionally, in case of a hazard, the system is also designed to turn on the hazard lights, alert you via the display and communicate the direction of the hazard with four haptic vibration motors mounted in the seat.

The patent also reveals that the safety system on the Indian also features a large amount of adjustability. It’ll allow you to adjust the distance you'd like to maintain from traffic among other other things.

Interestingly, an image of an Indian Scout fitted with a simple LCD text display in its speedo that reads out the type of vehicle you’re behind also hints that the safety tech will make it some of Indian’s more affordable models.
