I’m currently driving a BMW 5 Series M Sport (Petrol). It will be 5 years old in December and has clocked a little over 30k kms. I am looking at an upgrade in the luxury SUV segment. I was trying to do some analysis between the new range rover sport petrol and the new gen X5 that will launch in 2027. I will look to change my vehicle in early to mid 2027. I mostly use it for city driving and want a vehicle that I can use for longer road trips with my two young kids and dog.

Go for the Range Rover Sport petrol in 2027 - it will make your city days enjoyable and your long trips with kids and the dog easier. The air suspension glides over broken roads and can lower the car, so the dog hops in without drama, and the cabin stays very quiet, which matters with children on board. It also feels like a true upgrade from your 5 Series - far more special to sit in and arrive in, not just a taller BMW.The BMW X5 will likely be sharper to drive and lighter on its feet, and BMW’s service reach is wider. If you love the 5 Series’ tight, sporty feel, the X5 will feel familiar. But for family comfort first, the Range Rover Sport’s ride and seat comfort win.One honest catch: JLR ownership can be fussier than BMW - higher running costs and occasionally patchy service. Also expect the petrol to be thirsty in town. If that worries you, keep an eye on the X5 reveal in 2027, but if you want the most soothing daily drive and the best road-trip experience for kids and dog, the Range Rover Sport edges it.

I am confused about buying an SUV. I have checked the GLC, but it does not give me a proper SUV feel. The Q5 is due for an upgrade, while the X3 petrol feels underpowered, and the rear seat is not very comfortable. I currently drive a C-Class and now want an SUV that is primarily suited for highway driving. What would you recommend?

Most SUVs in this category are based on their sedan counterparts and thus will feel very car-like from behind the wheel. They all offer a higher seating position, AWD and a more practical liftback boot when compared to the sedans, however, which is enough for most buyers. If you want a tougher feeling SUV in this price range, check out the Land Rover Discovery Sport. It's a bit older than the rest now, but in true Land Rover style, it delivers a solid and commanding feel from the driver's seat. It also offers the flexibility of a third row of seats, and should you ever venture off the tarmac, it has the best AWD system and off-road traction control system in the segment. Recent updates have also brought in JLR's latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, which helps mask the SUV's age well, and both its engines - petrol and diesel - are quite strong. Most of all, it's relatively more affordable than the rest, too.

Hi, I’m looking to buy a new car primarily for my dad, who will be chauffeur-driven to work, but on weekends and road trips, I will drive it. I’m torn between the Lexus LM and the Range Rover HSE or Autobiography. I realize these are completely different vehicles, but neither my family nor I have been able to finalize a choice. Also, please share your insight on whether the petrol Autobiography is worth the ₹30 lakh premium.

The Lexus LM and Land Rover Range Rover HSE are completely different vehicles. The Lexus car is a fantastic chauffeur-driven car with a pair of rear seats that resemble a first-class cabin. We can see your father being very comfortable in the back seat, which has all amenities, and getting in and out of those sliding doors will be very easy. The Range Rover doesn’t have the same lounge-like cabin, but the back seat is fantastically comfortable too. Where the Range Rover noses ahead of the LM is with its far better ride quality and the sheer class it offers. An MPV, no matter how luxurious, somehow can’t match the status and image of an SUV. And lastly, for your weekend drives and road trips, the Range Rover drives much better than the LM.

I just sold my SUV and am looking to upgrade, I am an enthusiastic driver and go for on-road trips a lot. I have a family of 4 adults and a 5 month old kid. I am looking for a 4-seater SUV with great driving experience with a car seat for my kid. Also, I need space for a full size stroller and at least for 2 suitcases. As I will drive and explore through this car, reliability is important and easy access to get things fixed if at all is important. My budget is between 2 and 3 crore. Many have suggested LC 300. Do you have any other suggestions?

The Toyota Land Cruiser 300 is a very strong recommendation for your requirements. It is one of the most capable and reliable SUVs on the market, with a proven reputation for durability and dependability. It offers a spacious cabin that can comfortably accommodate four adults and a child seat, along with a large boot that can easily swallow a full-size stroller and multiple suitcases. Its off-road capability is exceptional, making it an excellent choice for road trips and exploration. The BMW X7 is another excellent option, offering a more engaging driving experience and a similarly spacious and luxurious cabin. BMW also offers extended warranty and prepaid maintenance packages for a worry-free ownership experience. If you are looking for something even more special, the Range Rover Sport is worth considering. It offers a superb blend of luxury, comfort and off-road capability, but it is considerably more expensive than the X7, and it does not have the same reputation for long-term reliability as the Toyota.

Hello, I am planning to buy an SUV for around Rs 1.5 crore. My options are the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Land Rover Defender, Range Rover Sport, and Porsche Cayenne. Which one should I go for?

At this budget and with these options, there are many directions you could go, all of which have some distinct advantage. The easiest one is the Mercedes-Benz GLS, which offers maximum space for your money, including a third row of seats. It offers the choice of smooth six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and Mercedes has the widest sales and service network of all these brands, so you're in good hands. Do note that, of these SUVs, this is the most common, and its large size can make it cumbersome to drive around town. The Land Rover Defender could be seen as the best value for money, and the one that offers the most variety, including four- and six- cylinder engines, and various body styles and seating configurations. With a slight stretch in budget, you can even get a supercharged V8 engine, which is incredibly characterful. However, quality in this Land Rover car isn't quite as good as the rest, including its own sibling, the Range Rover Sport. The Sport will push your budget, and even then, it offers a 6-cylinder petrol or diesel in a single HSE trim. However, it is the most rounded offering, mixing sumptuous luxury with good dynamics and characterful engines, not to mention excellent badge value. If you can stretch your budget slightly, this is the one to get.The Porsche Cayenne is the one to choose only if you put driving above all else on your priority list. It is exciting from behind the wheel and is a high-quality, solidly engineered product that also has great badge value. However, its performance focus means it's not as comfortable or easy to drive at low speeds, and many seemingly basic features are optional extras, which means this Porsche car too will push the limits of your budget.Overall, the Range Rover Sport is the best bet for you, or if you want a bit more space, the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
