Japanese petrochemical firm Idemitsu Kosan has created a sustainable engine oil for motorsport applications. Named Idemitsu IFG Plantech Racing, the lubricant uses plant-based raw materials for over 80 percent of its base oil and has the API SP certification from the American Petroleum Institute (API). The brand’s IFG series of oils has been developed with inputs from Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda engineers.

  1. Used in Mazda concept car in Super Taikyu endurance race
  2. Compatible with certain petrol-hybrid four-wheelers

Molybdenum Ester tech

Idemitsu’s proprietary Molybdenum Ester technology combines friction-reducing molybdenum, a chemical element, with high-viscosity esters from rapeseed and sunflower oils. As a result, a thick oil film is formed, which reduces wear and tear on crucial engine internals. Compared to mineral oils, Plantech Racing oil reduces the carbon footprint by 82 percent.

Used in Suzuka Super Taikyu race

World’s first plant-based motorsport engine oil: IFG Plantech RacingMazda Spirit Racing Roadster CNF concept.

The Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster CNF concept used this eco-friendly oil in the five-hour Suzuka Super Taikyu endurance race held last year. Notably, it is mandatory for all cars participating in the race to use engine oil which can withstand high temperatures and has a low evaporation rate. The Mazda concept completed the race with no problems reported.

Compatibility and availability

The company stated that the IFG Plantech Racing oil is compatible with turbocharged direct injection and petrol-hybrid cars requiring SAE 0W20 fluid viscosity grade. The IFG Plantech Racing engine oil can be purchased via Idemitsu’s website, but delivery is limited to Japan, Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Plans to expand availability to India, the United States, China and other regions are being considered.
