I want to buy a compact SUV, and I am unsure of which one to buy. I want automatic petrol, which I am sure of. I was thinking of Seltos, but then, mileage and engine after 5 years should be a concern? If I go for a duster, I am fearing service or post-dealership. Sierra, I did not like. Elevate is basic. Kushaq again, maintenance is higher. Don't want to go higher in budget, would love between 15-20 with panoramic sunroof. Checked for 3xo also, although its is sub compact, but the engine noise was higher. Please suggest to me

Pick the Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol IVT. It feels thoroughly modern, is feature-packed, spacious, and it also falls within your Rs 15-20 lakh budget, while having a panoramic sunroof. The 1.5 with the automatic is smoother than the turbo, easier to live with in traffic, and far less fussy long term. With regular service, there is no five-year engine worry; these motors routinely do big mileage without drama. As far as mileage goes, expect 10-11kpl in the city and 14-15kpl on the highway, which is fair for a car of this size.

My budget is around ₹20 lakh on-road, and I am specifically looking for a diesel SUV. My usage pattern would be roughly 80% highway driving, 15% city driving, and 5% mild off-road usage. My priorities are: Spacious cabin Good fuel efficiency Comfortable ride quality I can compromise slightly on outright performance if the car excels in comfort, practicality, and mileage. At the moment, I am confused between the Tata Sierra Diesel, Mahindra XUV 7XO Diesel, Renault Duster Diesel, and Kia Seltos Diesel.

Verified

The Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 diesel-manual fits your brief best. It has the roomiest cabin of your list and is the only one with three-row seating. Of course, with the last row folded, its boot is generous for luggage. On the highway, it feels steady and calm, rides bumps well, and the diesel is refined and both, punchy and efficient. Ground clearance and its inherent toughness make it capable of tackling light trails and rough roads.

I have shortlisted four cars: the Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra, Renault Duster, and Mahindra Thar Roxx. I want a turbo-petrol car with an automatic transmission. The car should be comfortable, good-looking, safe, and have strong build quality. My annual running is approximately 10,000-12,000 km.

The Kia Seltos 1.5 turbo-petrol with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) is the one that fits your brief best. The DCT changes gears very quickly once you are moving, so city drives feel easy and highway trips feel strong and smooth. The Seltos also rides well for daily use, the seats are supportive, and the cabin looks and feels upmarket. For safety and build, it gives you a solid-feeling body, a long list of safety features, and on higher trims even driver assist tech; plus it received a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating.A couple of things to note for your use: like most dual-clutch gearboxes, there can be a small pause at very low speeds, and if you spend hours in slow traffic every day it is best to drive gently. From your list, the Mahindra Thar Roxx 2.0 petrol automatic is the one to pick if you mainly want a tough, go-anywhere machine and love the stance, but for daily comfort and ease it is not as relaxed as the Seltos, and it has very poor fuel economy. The suspension isn't as absorbent and the controls aren't as light. The Duster and Sierra come much closer, the Renault imparting a tougher feel while still remaining comfortable, and the Sierra feeling large and more comfortable. However, overall, for mixed city-highway use and your priorities, the Seltos turbo DCT lines up best.

I am planning to buy my first car and I want a compact SUV that offers the best family comfort and ride experience. Among the Tata Sierra, Skoda Kushaq, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, and Hyundai Creta, please suggest which base‑variant model would be the best fit for me, so that I can upgrade features later as per my needs.

Verified
15w

Go for the Kia Seltos base variant. Among your options, it offers the best starting point if you plan to add features over time. Recent comparisons show that base variants in this segment are no longer bare-bones, and the Seltos stands out for offering a more feature-rich entry trim than most rivals, so you won’t feel shortchanged even without immediate upgrades. The latest Seltos is also larger than key rivals like the Hyundai Creta, which translates to better cabin space and rear-seat comfort, along with a more modern and premium overall feel. The Creta remains a very comfortable and easy-going SUV, especially in terms of ride quality, but its base variant feels more basic in comparison, so it makes more sense if you are planning to step up to higher trims rather than build from the base. The Skoda Kushaq is solid and safe, but the base variant is not as well equipped as the Seltos. As for the Tata Sierra, the base variant is the least equipped here and does not even get an infotainment screen, which makes it harder to recommend if you are starting from a lower trim and planning gradual upgrades.

Hi, I have been following Autocar’s Q&A section closely and find it very insightful. I am currently exploring options for my next car, although I do not plan to purchase 2027. The new Renault Duster (2026), especially the 1.3 Turbo variant, has really caught my attention, and I am keen to take a test drive. My primary usage will be city driving, with occasional long-distance trips. Since this will be my first new car purchase, there is also an emotional aspect attached to it. I really like the interiors of the Kia Seltos, although I am not a fan of its exterior design. I was also excited about the Tata Sierra, but I was somewhat disappointed after seeing it in person. The Tata Curvv, particularly the petrol (Hyperion) variant, seems more appealing in comparison. Overall, the new Duster stands out to me, and I have yet to find any major drawbacks with it. On the other hand, my wife prefers the Tata Harrier for its strong road presence and overall appeal, but I am unsure if it justifies the higher cost for a small family of two (plus a dog). What would you advise in this situation? I have seen you advise the Honda Elevate to a lot of people who mention that city driving is the majority. Also, since my purchase is planned for 2027, do you expect more suitable options to be available in this segment by then?

By 2027, you’ll have far more options to choose from, including (but not limited to) the Nissan Tekton (a Duster-equivalent), the next-gen Hyundai Creta, Honda’s new electric SUV, and several new-generation Mahindra SUVs. Do write in when you’re in the market for a new car with your exact requirements, and we’ll help solve your car-buying conundrum.
