We currently own a 2018 Hyundai Creta, but my mother is retiring next year and loves big cars. I'm looking for a 7-seater, preferably with a manual transmission, and my budget is around 45 lakh. The car will be used 90% on highways and 10% on rough roads. She likes the Mahindra Scorpio, but I'm not keen on it because of concerns about Mahindra's service centers. What would you recommend?

Pick the Toyota Innova Crysta diesel manual. For 90% highway use, it just eats distance, the seats are genuinely comfortable for seven, and the diesel’s easy torque makes overtakes calm even with luggage. It is a proper big, tough, ladder-frame car, so your 10% on rough roads is no worry, and Toyota’s service reach and consistency are a clear step up from what you’ve seen with Scorpio. The catch is that it is not a true 4x4, so deep slush or serious trails are off the menu, and it will not wow anyone with gadgets. If you want a more SUV-looking option and still a manual, the Jeep Meridian diesel manual is worth a look for its sharper cabin and nicer highway manners, but for space, toughness and hassle-free ownership, the Toyota car fits your brief best.

Please suggest a used diesel manual 2WD SUV within a maximum budget of Rs.13 lakh. I prefer a vehicle that is not older than 8 years. My top priority is a strong torque-rich driving experience.

Considering your needs and budget, you should take a look at the Jeep Compass 2.0 diesel manual 4x2, ideally a 2018-2020 Sport or Longitude. It suits your brief because the torquey engine gives a strong shove from low revs, so this diesel car pulls cleanly in 3rd and 4th without needing frequent downshifts. That makes quick highway passes easy. It also feels steady at speed, and the build feels solid, which adds confidence on long drives. Do note a couple of trade-offs. The clutch can feel a bit heavy in slow city traffic. Rear-seat and boot space are not as generous as those of larger rivals, so if you often travel with five adults, keep that in mind. Service costs will also be higher than those of a Maruti or Hyundai.

I am an enthusiastic driver and do a lot of road trips. My family is of 4 adults and a 4-month old kid (we use car seat). I am looking for an SUV that offers great driving experience along with good comfort and reliability. Boot space is also crucial with space for a stroller and at least couple more suitcases. I don’t mind spending the money required for the right SUV that can be my companion for a really long time.

Go for the Skoda Kodiaq or Volkswagen Tayron, which are sister models from different brands. They are among the best driver’s SUVs in the segment, with strong performance, excellent handling and a genuinely premium feel. The ride is well judged, the cabin is spacious enough for four adults plus a child seat, and the boot is large enough to comfortably accommodate a stroller and a couple of suitcases. If you stretch your budget, you can get the 7-seat versions with greater space flexibility and more features, but the five-seat versions are closer to your budget with the same performance and handling. Bear in mind, however, that they are still on the expensive side and fuel economy will not be great.A bit easier on the pocket will be the Jeep Compass, which is more affordable and comes with a diesel engine. It's also quite a lot of fun to drive, but doesn't score as well on the reliability stakes. Finally, another option is the outgoing Audi Q3, remaining stocks of which should be available with some good discounts given the launch of the new model is right around the corner. It's a bit smaller than the VW and Skoda, but even more fun to drive, with the same 2.0 TFSI engine. And though it's the outgoing generation, it remains a premium and luxurious SUV that feels worth the money. For your needs, though, the Skoda Kodiaq and VW Tayron are the best bet. Choosing between them is down to preference, but the Tayron has a sportier design for the exterior and interior, while the Kodiaq has more of a luxurious vibe.

I am currently driving a 2022 Jeep Compass manual petrol and have been using it for four years. I am experiencing side hip and lower-back pain due to the manual clutch, especially with city and highway driving. In the future, I will be driving around 120km per day for work. Please suggest a premium SUV with good back support and high fuel efficiency.

Since your budget is over Rs 30 lakhs, we'd suggest waiting for the Kia Sorento. It is a three-row SUV that's likely to be launched with hybrid and diesel-automatic powertrain options. As expected from a Kia, the Sorento is likely to be feature-rich too, with a high-quality interior and comfy seats. This one could be a good upgrade from your petrol manual Jeep Compass.Alternatively, you could consider the top-spec Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel-automatic. It has comfy seats, an excellent suspension tune, and a spacious cabin. Also, the diesel-auto will be quite efficient.

Infotainment on my Compass freezes for a few seconds almost every time I switch from Android Auto back to the native interface.
