I am planning to buy a new car. My budget is around Rs 30 lakh. My final two choices are: 1. XUV 7XO AX7T 2. Tata Harrier Fearless Ultra / Ultra Dark Red. Key considerations: petrol only, automatic transmission, TC is fine; not specifically looking for a DCT, good power and pickup, safety, fun to drive / good driving dynamics, average driving: 7,000- 10,000 km per year. I have driven the Jeep Compass Petrol for 4 years and love its driving dynamics and solid feel. That is the benchmark for me. I am not going for the Compass again because it is an older model and no longer available with a petrol engine.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7T petrol automatic. It is the better fit for your requirements. The 2.0 turbo petrol is a strong engine with good power and pickup, and the 8-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and well-suited to both city and highway driving. This Mahindra car also has a solid, planted feel on the road and good high-speed stability, which is something you will appreciate coming from the Compass. It is also a more modern package overall, with a richer feature set and a more premium cabin experience. The Tata Harrier petrol is a good car, but the 1.5-litre turbo petrol is not as powerful as the Mahindra engine. The Harrier's strength used to be its ride comfort, but with the update, the 7XO matches that too.Between the two, the 7XO is the more complete car.

Please suggest a used diesel manual 2WD SUV within a maximum budget of Rs.13 lakh. I prefer a vehicle that is not older than 8 years. My top priority is a strong torque-rich driving experience.

Considering your needs and budget, you should take a look at the Jeep Compass 2.0 diesel manual 4x2, ideally a 2018-2020 Sport or Longitude. It suits your brief because the torquey engine gives a strong shove from low revs, so this diesel car pulls cleanly in 3rd and 4th without needing frequent downshifts. That makes quick highway passes easy. It also feels steady at speed, and the build feels solid, which adds confidence on long drives. Do note a couple of trade-offs. The clutch can feel a bit heavy in slow city traffic. Rear-seat and boot space are not as generous as those of larger rivals, so if you often travel with five adults, keep that in mind. Service costs will also be higher than those of a Maruti or Hyundai.

Hi AutoCar team, I am from Bangalore. I found a second-hand deal of a Jeep Compass 2024 Model S(O) 4x4 for 25 lakh with 25,000 km on the odometer and a 5-year extended warranty. Is it better to buy this over a new XUV 7XO AX7L AWD? I don’t need a 7-seater but want a good AWD SUV. My heart says Jeep, but I will be the second owner.

The Jeep Compass 4x4 is still a very desirable SUV. This Jeep car feels solid and premium and is one of the best to drive in this segment, with excellent ride and handling balance and genuine off-road ability. That is exactly why it appeals emotionally. However, when you look at your usage and long-term ownership, the Mahindra XUV 7XO makes more sense. It is more powerful, more spacious and far more practical for everyday use. The cabin is wider, rear seat comfort is better, and the overall feature set is much stronger, which adds to day-to-day convenience and value.Coming to the deal itself, a 2024 Compass with 25,000 km at that price is reasonable, especially with an extended warranty. But, you will still be the second owner of a premium brand, which means higher maintenance costs, slightly lower resale later and a bit more risk compared to buying new. The Compass is also a smaller SUV, and over time, the tighter rear space can start to feel like a compromise. The difference is simple. The Compass is a heart-driven choice with strong driving appeal, while the XUV 7XO is the more practical, feature-rich and better value option.

I am a retired person and currently own a Jeep Compass Limited Plus diesel manual, which I am planning to replace. My driving is about 5% in Chennai city and the rest on highways. Once every two months, I go on long road trips, mainly on highways and rural roads. Most of the time, it will be just me and my wife, with occasionally two additional passengers. I am considering the diesel Kia Seltos or Mahindra 7XO within a ₹16-18 lakh on-road budget. Kindly suggest which vehicle and model would be most suitable for my needs.

For your usage, which is mostly highway driving with occasional rural roads and long trips, the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual is the better fit. It offers a more relaxed and effortless driving experience, especially over long distances. An important point in your case is what you are upgrading from. Your Jeep Compass diesel uses a 2.0-litre engine, and moving to the Kia Seltos diesel, which has a smaller 1.5-litre engine, will not feel like an upgrade in terms of performance. It will feel adequate, but not significantly stronger than what you are used to.The XUV 7XO, on the other hand, also uses a larger 2.0-litre diesel engine, and despite being a bigger car, it will feel like a proper step up. You will notice stronger pulling power, more effortless highway cruising and better overall performance. It also feels more stable and composed at speed, which suits your kind of long-distance driving. Refinement levels are also good, making it a comfortable car for extended journeys. The Seltos diesel is easier to drive in the city and feels more compact and user-friendly, but on highways and rough rural roads, it does not feel as robust or as planted as the 7XO.One important point is the budget. The 7XO diesel variants may go slightly above your Rs 18 lakh on-road range, depending on the variant and location, so you will need to check exact pricing.

Hi, I have a 2017 Ford EcoSport Diesel Titanium, which served me well with hardly any issues. Now, I want to upgrade to a new or used car (open to both) with a budget of 12-20 lakh. I’m confused between the new or used Toyota Hyryder Hybrid, Tata Sierra, new Seltos, Thar Roxx petrol auto, or new/used Honda Elevate ZX CVT. I recently test-drove a used 2023 Jeep Compass S petrol auto, which I liked, but petrol is discontinued, and it’s only E10 compliant. What do you suggest, wait or buy now?

With a budget of Rs 20 lakh, your options in the used car market are endless - get the newest possible car you can find, preferably still in warranty. Being an EcoSport owner, it is natural to gravitate towards the Jeep Compass for its toughness and brilliant ride-handling balance. You can look for a less-driven Mahindra XUV700 automatic for its well-roundedness. Out of the new options, the Tata Sierra seems promising and is worth waiting for before you finalize.
