I am planning to buy a new car. My budget is around Rs 30 lakh. My final two choices are: 1. XUV 7XO AX7T 2. Tata Harrier Fearless Ultra / Ultra Dark Red. Key considerations: petrol only, automatic transmission, TC is fine; not specifically looking for a DCT, good power and pickup, safety, fun to drive / good driving dynamics, average driving: 7,000- 10,000 km per year. I have driven the Jeep Compass Petrol for 4 years and love its driving dynamics and solid feel. That is the benchmark for me. I am not going for the Compass again because it is an older model and no longer available with a petrol engine.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7T petrol automatic. It is the better fit for your requirements. The 2.0 turbo petrol is a strong engine with good power and pickup, and the 8-speed torque converter automatic is smooth and well-suited to both city and highway driving. This Mahindra car also has a solid, planted feel on the road and good high-speed stability, which is something you will appreciate coming from the Compass. It is also a more modern package overall, with a richer feature set and a more premium cabin experience.

The Tata Harrier petrol is a good car, but the 1.5-litre turbo petrol is not as powerful as the Mahindra engine. The Harrier's strength used to be its ride comfort, but with the update, the 7XO matches that too.

Between the two, the 7XO is the more complete car.

The Thar Roxx is a fun and capable off-roader, but it is not the right choice for your usage. Your 96 km daily commute on a mix of bumpy roads, ghats and highway demands a car that is comfortable, efficient and easy to live with. This Mahindra car is heavy, has a bouncy ride, limited boot space and is not very fuel-efficient either. It is best suited as a second car or a weekend adventure vehicle.Given your requirements, the Tata Sierra diesel is the best fit. It has an engine that's strong enough to handle your highway and ghat sections with ease, a comfortable ride, a spacious cabin for your family and a large boot for your dog and luggage. It is also far more efficient and refined for daily use than the Thar Roxx. If you want something more premium and comfortable, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is also worth considering, but the Sierra will be more fuel-efficient, and you will get a top-spec variant in your budget.

I have a 2018 Fiat Punto and am planning to upgrade to an automatic SUV with good boot space. My daily city commute is around 50 km in heavy traffic. However, I'm unable to find an alternative that offers the same mileage and driving experience as the Punto. Please suggest.

Being a Fiat Punto owner, a Jeep Compass diesel-automatic would have been an ideal upgrade for you, however there are far better, more affordable options available in the market. You could consider a Mahindra XUV 7XO or even a Tata Harrier, for their solid build, and confidence-inspiring driving experience. The diesel-automatic versions of both these should return respectable fuel efficiency too.However, if you want something a bit more compact and more manageable in the city, consider the strong hybrid versions of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara or Maruti Suzuki Victoris. All three are essentially the same car underneath; their hybrid powertrain is very efficient; and dynamically they are very capable too. Between these three, choose the one you think looks better, and the brand you're comfortable with.

I currently own a Skoda Kushaq Petrol AT. Everything is fine except the mileage. I am getting only around 10-13kpl with E20 petrol. My daily running is around 100 km. Should I buy a diesel car or an electric car?

The Skoda Kushaq petrol automatic is a good car, but the 10-13kpl you are seeing is typical for a turbo petrol automatic, especially with E20 petrol.
