I need to buy an automatic car under ₹18 lakh with the best features and ADAS. Please advise.

Asked by: Amresh Singh

There are multiple cars you can buy which get ADAS and are priced below Rs 18 lakh. Out of these, the Hyundai Venue is the newest and the most feature-loaded option. You could consider either a 1.5 Diesel with a 6-speed torque converter, or a 1.0 Turbo-petrol engine with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The former will be more efficient, while the latter is more refined. The Venue gets level 2 ADAS, and most of these features seem to have been tuned well for our traffic and road conditions.

Another feature-rich, automatic option that you could consider is the Kia Syros. It is powered by the same engine-gearbox combinations as the Venue.

I want to upgrade my ride. My requirements are a 7-seater with good ride quality, primarily for highway driving and hilly terrains. I am confused between the Mahindra Scorpio-N 4x4, Tata Safari Adventure X, and Mahindra XUV700. Also, do you think an AMT gearbox will be better for my usage compared to a manual? I am planning to use the car mainly for interstate road trips. Please suggest a good vehicle.

The best car from the shortlisted options is the Mahindra XUV 7XO. Ride comfort is excellent, and its engines are smooth, refined, and powerful enough for highway driving and hilly terrains. In case the terrain you tackle is too extreme for front-wheel drive vehicles, you could consider getting the all-wheel drive variant, for better traction. The latter is only available with diesel-automatic variants, and if you have the budget, it will be the best option for your inter-state road trips.

Which one would you prefer between the Tata Sierra and the Renault (or Dacia) Duster Hybrid, considering my annual running is around 7,000-8,000 km, including about 2,000-3,000 km on highways? I am particularly interested in the Sierra TGDi AT variant, but the Duster Hybrid makes the choice a bit confusing. Please advise.

Since you are concerned about mileage, a diesel or petrol-hybrid does make sense, and we can see your confusion between the two. Generally speaking, the hybrid would be a safer bet in the long run, given the uncertainty around diesel with the authorities, plus you will also have a quieter powertrain. However, we have yet to drive the hybrid Renault Duster, and this will only arrive in the second half of this year. So, you would have to wait until then.

I am looking for a new car that is feature-rich, offers the best ground clearance, and delivers good mileage within a budget of ₹ 8 to 10 lakh. I live in a hilly terrain.

You should consider the Tata Punch. It is a sub-compact SUV with a good ground clearance of 193mm, and it comes with features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a sunroof, auto climate control, digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charger and much more, in the top-spec Accomplished+ S variant. The Punch is also quite spacious and comfortable for its size. The Punch facelift also gets a new 120hp, 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine so it won't have any trouble dealing with hilly roads. However, its mileage won't be as good as the 88hp, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine. Tata Punch prices range from Rs 6.22 lakh to Rs 12.30 lakh (on-road, Delhi).

I am going to buy my first car. My usage will be around 50-80 km during peak summers and peak winters, mostly for about 8 months. For the rest of the year, the car will almost remain parked at home. The only car that comes to mind is the Tata Punch because of family safety. However, I feel I might be ignoring other factors like mileage and after-sales service costs. Please guide me on various options, keeping safety and a budget of not more than ₹9 lakh in mind. I would prefer a four-cylinder engine if possible, although the Punch has a three-cylinder engine. Can the Altroz diesel be a good alternative? My preference is a manual transmission.

The Tata Punch is a good, practical car that's proven its mettle for its safety. As you've mentioned, its three-cylinder petrol engine feels inadequate, and Tata doesn't have a solid reputation for after-sales support either.Since you're looking for a four-cylinder option with mileage, service costs, as well as safety, we'd recommend you consider the Hyundai Venue, the 1.2 Petrol MT HX2 variant, which is the entry-level variant. As far as smoothness, refinement, space, and an upmarket interior feel go, the Venue is easily the better car.
