Avdumber Hede took pole position during the final qualifying session of the 2011 JK Tyre VW Polo Cup season. The rain-lashed weekend at the MMST Track saw the Goa driver set the fastest lap in torrid conditions while his championship rivals Vishnu Prasad and Rahil Noorani will start in second and fourth position respectively with just five points separating the latter two with Pune’s Oshan Kothadiya splitting the duo, starting third.
Earlier in the day, organisers announced that the shorter club loop will be used for the races due to torrential downpour which left the far parts of the circuit submerged in water. Irrespective though, mathematically there are five drivers still in contention of winning the title and earning a seat in the VW Scirocco Cup for 2012.
Post-qualifying, Avdumber said, “Today’s conditions were probably the hardest I have ever driven in but am happy that I was able to put the car on pole position. I know I still have an outside chance of winning the championship but my main goal is to win the race tomorrow and see what happens from there. Hopefully I can get a great start and try to control the race from there.”
Vishnu Prasad’s best effort left him 0.297 seconds shy from the pole sitter, “Qualifying was really tough as the conditions deteriorated during the session. The start will be crucial for me tomorrow so will do the best to have a quick getaway. Hopefully conditions tomorrow will be better and we can have a dry race. My aim since the beginning of the year has been to win the championship and I will tackle the race with this in mind.”
