I am confused between the Seltos and the new facelifted Slavia. My budget is around Rs. 16-17 lakh, and I want a family car with good comfort, boot space, mileage, and an enjoyable driving experience on highways. I am also considering the Syros EV. I don't want a diesel or an automatic. I prefer petrol and a manual if I don't go for an EV. Please suggest the best option and variant.

Based on your requirements, the Skoda Slavia facelift is the better fit. This Skoda car is a family car with good comfort, a large boot, decent mileage and is properly fun to drive. The 1.0 TSI engine is punchy, the 6-speed manual gearbox is slick, and the car feels planted and stable at speed. The Seltos is a very good all-rounder, but at your budget you will be looking at a lower variant, and the Slavia simply offers a more complete package for your needs. The Syros EV is worth considering only if you have home charging and predominantly city usage. For your requirements, the Slavia 1.0 TSI manual is the best choice.

Hi Autocar India, I’m planning to buy a new car under Rs 16 lakh for my family of five. My monthly usage is around 500km, mostly on highways. I’m currently considering: Hyundai i20 N Line, Hyundai Verna 1.5 MPI, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Virtus, and Skoda Slavia. I personally prefer low-slung cars over SUVs. My priorities are long-term reliability, family comfort, highway stability, good safety, reasonable maintenance costs, and overall ownership experience. Which one would you recommend for my requirements, especially for long-term ownership? Also, which engine and variant would be the best choice within my Rs 16 lakh budget? Thanks! I’d love to hear your expert recommendation.

You can get the HX6+ variant of the Verna with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol-manual powertrain, which is pleasant to drive, stable on highways, and paired with a comfortable, soft suspension setup. Being a Hyundai car, it also has reasonable maintenance costs. The Hyundai Verna has also scored a perfect 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests, so you can rest assured about safety. The Skoda Slavia is due for an update very soon, but in this budget you will have to settle for entry-level variants that don't offer much equipment. The Verna, on the other hand, will get you LED headlamps, front ventilated seats, a single-pane sunroof and others. All things considered, the Hyundai Verna is the best choice for your requirements.

I want to buy a car, and my budget is 22 lakhs on road. I personally prefer a sedan, but I am open to buying an SUV as well. I need something which is powerful, fun to drive and is feature-loaded (ADAS, 360 camera, ventilated seats etc). I have shortlisted the following: Verna, Seltos, Slavia and Virtus. Which one should I go for? I am planning to buy it in the next 3-4 months.

Considering the features you've listed, namely ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and ventilated seats, the shortlist effectively narrows down to the Hyundai Verna and Kia Seltos. In fact, the car that would normally be recommended to an enthusiast is the Volkswagen Virtus 1.5 TSI DSG. You can expect the Volkswagen Virtus mileage to be around 9 to 12 kpl in the city and 15 to 18 kpl on the highway, and the Hyundai Verna Mileage is up to 13.5kpl in real-world driving. The Virtus remains one of the most rewarding cars to drive in this segment, and there are attractive discounts available at the moment as a facelift is expected in the near future. However, this sedan car misses out on some of the features that are clearly important to you.Between the Verna and Seltos, the nod goes to the Seltos. It is the newer product, feels more premium inside, offers greater practicality and has a more spacious cabin. It also benefits from the same excellent 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and dual-clutch automatic combination as the Verna, so you are not sacrificing performance. Over the long term, it is also likely to hold its value better.

I am confused between the Kia Seltos and the Skoda Slavia. My monthly running is under 1,000 km, with a usage split of 60% city and 40% highway. The car should comfortably accommodate five passengers and offer a practical boot space. My budget is under ₹16 lakh (on-road). Please suggest which option would be better, along with the most value-for-money and practical variant. Also, let me know if there are any other cars I should consider within this budget.

The Kia Seltos 1.5 petrol HTK (O) MT fits your brief best. In daily traffic, the Seltos will be easy to drive thanks to its smooth, naturally aspirated petrol engine and light gearshift and clutch, and the higher seat makes getting in and out easy. It also rides over bad roads and tall speed breakers without worry, which matters on mixed city-highway use. Space is good for four and fine for five for shorter trips, and the boot will take a family’s weekend bags. The HTK (O) MT is a good value for money as it offers quite a few features for the price. Just bear in mind that, on the highway, the engine will require a bit more effort to make easy overtakes. If your trips are often with four adults and lots of luggage, and you value a bigger boot and stronger pull on the highway, look at the Skoda Slavia 1.0 TSI Sportline MT. Its small turbo engine gives more punch. But it is a lower car, so entry is not as easy, and you have to be a bit more careful on rough roads. Compared to the Seltos' naturally aspirated 1.5, you'll also experience some turbo lag at city speeds, and at your budget, you won't get as many features. Overall, for your mix of city and highway and firm budget, the Seltos HTK is the most practical pick.
