Hi Team Autocar, I currently drive a Ford EcoSport 1.0 EcoBoost and am looking to upgrade to a petrol automatic, either a sedan or SUV, with a budget of Rs 20 lakh on-road. Since I am coming from a punchy turbo-petrol, performance and driving engagement are my top priorities. I plan to keep the car for at least eight years, so long-term reliability and a strong manufacturer commitment to India are also important. My driving split is roughly 70% city and 30% highway. Given my priorities, which car would offer the best blend of performance, strong build quality and long-term peace of mind?

Go for the Skoda Kushaq 1.5 TSI DCT Sportline. Coming from the EcoSport 1.0 EcoBoost, you are used to a punchy turbo petrol, and the Kushaq 1.5 TSI will feel like a proper step up. It is one of the most engaging SUVs to drive in this price range, with strong mid-range performance and a well-sorted chassis that makes it enjoyable on both city roads and highways. The DSG gearbox is quick and responsive, adding to the overall driving experience.Alternatively, you could consider a Renault Duster 1.3 Turbo DCT or Nissan Tekton 1.3 Turbo DCT. These are genuinely fun to drive, with an excellent ride-handling balance. Do keep in mind that turbo lag is a bit more pronounced in these, and fuel efficiency will be a bit lower than in the Kushaq 1.5 DSG.

I’m 6’2” and my top priority is a comfortable driving posture, especially good thigh support and seating position. My current Grand i10 has become quite uncomfortable during longer drives. I absolutely loved the seating position and overall comfort of XUV 700 and I can say it is probably the best car that I have driven. However, I’m unsure about managing something that big in size in Bangalore traffic. I have taken the test drive of the new Tekton, but still found the seating position a bit awkward. Should I simply go for the XUV 7XO, or are there other petrol options that offer similar seating comfort while being easier to manage in the city? I want the car mostly for weekend city drives, with an outstation trip once every 2 months. My total running is around 3,000-4,000 km/year, so I am not considering a diesel car.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol automatic. Your priority is clear: a comfortable driving position with good thigh support and a commanding seating position. The XUV 7XO delivers exactly that, and at 6’2” you will appreciate the generous seat travel, supportive cushioning and the overall sense of space.Your concern about Bangalore traffic is understandable, but the XUV 7XO is not as intimidating as it looks. The steering is light at low speeds, the visibility is good and the automatic gearbox makes stop-go traffic far less tiring. Once you get used to the dimensions, it is perfectly manageable in the city.The Tekton is a good car, but the seating position is not as commanding and the overall comfort is not at the same level as the XUV 7XO.

I own a 2023 XL6 as well as a 2014 Nissan Micra petrol manual. I am using Micra for daily city driving that is around 20 km. I am planning to upgrade Micra and am confused between a hatchback and compact SUV. I like Ignis automatic but it has been discontinued. Please suggest.

You could consider the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios AMT. It is a compact, easy-to-drive and a very refined hatchback. The cabin quality is excellent, and it should be a good replacement for the Micra. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT is also a good option, that's a bit larger and more spacious compared to the Nios. Alternatively, if you can stretch your budget a bit, the Nissan Magnite Turbo-CVT will be a good upgrade from your outgoing car. It is easier to get in and out, has a stronger turbo-petrol engine, and its CVT (automatic) is far smoother than all AMT options available.
