CNG cars in India (30)

Petrol prices have been going up for a while now in India, and with E20 petrol being sold at every pump in the country, a large number of car owners have reported a significant drop in mileage. As per the government, the drop should have been between 2%-5%, but real-world complaints convey a different story. These days, mileage has become a genuine talking point among car owners rather than a fringe concern because petrol isn’t just costlier per litre, but also stretches less far than it used to.

So, what's the way out? The answer: CNG cars. Why? First, CNG is not affected by the ethanol-blending program, so its running costs remain more predictable. Second, unlike E85, it also does not require a special car or a rare pump. Third, you have a decent number of CNG cars to choose from as there are 28 CNG cars available in India, with prices starting at Rs 3.50 lakh and going up to Rs 20 lakh.

If not petrol, are EVs a better option than CNG cars?

It depends, as an EV can be a better option for people who mostly drive within the city and have easy access to a home or office charger. But for those, who frequently travel on highways, cover long distances, it could be a hassle. For them, a CNG car will be a more practical choice.

Apart from this, here are some other reasons:

  • Cost: EVs are more expensive than CNG cars. A CNG hatchback starts at just Rs 3.50 lakh, but an electric hatchback starts at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
  • Availability: CNG stations are present almost everywhere, but EV charging infrastructure is still developing in India.
  • Refuel time: A CNG car takes just a few minutes to refill. Meanwhile, EVs need longer time, usually hours, to recharge.
  • Resale value: CNG cars have years of resale history behind them, while EVs simply haven't been around long enough to know.

Note: At Autocar India, we believe that, as of now, EVs do not hold residual values as well as their ICE and CNG counterparts. This holds true across segments and brands, although the picture could change as the EV market matures.

Factors to consider before you buy a CNG car in India

  • In most of these cars, the CNG cylinder is placed in the boot. Therefore, if you often travel with family or carry a good amount of luggage, test-sit the boot before purchasing.
  • Most factory-fitted CNG cars are tuned for running costs, not outright performance. Hence, overtaking on highways might not feel so confidence-inspiring.
  • Most CNG variants are manual-only. Only a handful of these 28 models offer CNG with an AMT or an automatic transmission.
  • The Indian Biogas Association has recently pitched the Delhi government on blending up to 20% compressed biogas (CBG) into CNG, up from the roughly 2%-3% used today. It's still just a recommendation awaiting government action, and Delhi's current CBG capacity is nowhere close to what a 20% blend would actually require.

Note: At Autocar India, we strongly recommend sticking to factory-fitted CNG variants over aftermarket retrofit kits. A retrofit kit can void your car's existing warranty, and the fitment quality varies a lot depending on who installs it. The extra spend on a factory-fit option is worth the peace of mind.

Which CNG car is the right pick for you?

At Autocar India, we would recommend that you choose based on how you plan to use the car.

CNG Cars - FAQs

CNG models come with separate fuel lines, fuel injectors and an upgraded engine control unit over regular petrol-only systems. They also need heavy-duty tanks specially designed to store the gas, plus various built-in measures like cut-off valves and leak sensors to enhance overall safety. All of these add to the cost, making CNG cars more expensive.

Compressed natural gas burns cleaner and more completely than regular petrol or diesel, making it more environmentally friendly. Cars running on CNG emit less carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter into the atmosphere. And because CNG's higher hydrogen-to-carbon ratio allow it to combust more thoroughly, there's less fuel wastage as well.

As long as your CNG car has been approved by governing agencies and the manufacturers of the vehicle and fuel system, there are no serious safety risks. However, since CNG is a flammable gas, avoid being near sources of flame during refuelling or if there's a suspected leak.

If the setup call for a single large tank or smaller dual tanks in the boot, then you'll have to deal with lower cargo capacity. On the other hand, some CNG cars have their tanks mounted under the boot floor, which leaves more room to store luggage. While this setup is more practical, it usually leaves no room to store a spare tyre.

Hello Autocar Team, I need your unbiased expert opinion before buying a new car. I am confused between Tata Altroz Pure CNG AMT quoted for Rs. 9.41 lakh (on-road price) and Tata Altroz Creative CNG Manual of which I am waiting for the final quotation. My budget is Rs. 10.5 lakh. I have been driving manual cars for the last 10 years, and my running is mostly in the Mumbai city traffic and production-location travel. I want a CNG car with good features, safety, comfort and long-term value for money. I am considering spending around Rs. 50,000 extra on the automatic gearbox versus choosing the Creative manual for its additional factory-fitted features. Which variant would you recommend for my usage, and why? I would really appreciate your honest advice before finalising the purchase. Thank you.

Go for the Pure CNG AMT. In Mumbai traffic the automatic is the upgrade you’ll appreciate every single day, whereas extra features soon fade into the background. After 10 years of working a clutch in stop-go traffic, you’ll notice the difference within a week. On paper the Creative manual and the Pure AMT cost about the same, so you’re really choosing between convenience and kit, and for your driving convenience wins. There are two things to know before you go ahead. First, an AMT isn’t as smooth as a proper automatic. It pauses slightly between gears, so we would suggest you to take a test drive of Altroz AMT in traffic before you book. Second, the Pure misses out on rear AC vents, which the Creative gets. If you often carry people in the back in Mumbai’s heat, that’s worth weighing up.Both share the same 5-star Bharat NCAP-rated body and the twin-cylinder CNG setup, so you still get a usable boot. On long trips, expect the CNG to feel a bit strained at expressway speeds. That’s the same whichever variant you buy.

I want a car with decent mileage, good safety and comfortable highway manners. I am confused between the Tata Nexon CNG and Punch CNG. Which would you recommend for long-term family use?

Verified

Go for the Tata Nexon CNG. It is a bigger car with a turbo-petrol-CNG engine that feels far more effortless as far as performance goes compared to the naturally aspirated petrol-CNG Punch. You will certainly appreciate the added performance on the highway, and the Nexon also gets 6-speed manual gearbox, which makes the engine spin at lower revs while cruising (compared to the Punch's 5-speeder). And when it comes to stability, ride comfort, and cabin space, the Nexon has an edge over the Punch. Hence, as a safe and comfortable family car for highway use, the Nexon CNG is the clear choice.

XUV 3XO is reportedly getting a CNG option. Do you think this could be a good choice for someone looking for an SUV with lower running costs?

I am confused between the Tata Punch AMT iCNG, Tata Aeris AMT iCNG and Honda Amaze automatic with CNG. Which would be better for a family of four with a mix of city and highway driving?

Verified

For a family of four doing a mix of city and highway driving, the Tata Aeris iCNG AMT is the best all-rounder of the three. Being a sedan, it gives you more rear-seat room and better highway stability than the Tata Punch. Its twin-cylinder CNG setup also leaves you a usable 227-litre boot, so weekend luggage isn't a problem. The Punch iCNG AMT uses the same twin-cylinder layout and gets a 210-litre boot. Its higher ground clearance and compact size make it easier to live with in tight city traffic and on bad roads. However, it's a smaller car overall, and four adults will feel more cramped on long drives. The Honda Amaze is the most refined car here, and its CVT is far smoother than the AMTs in both Tata cars. Keep in mind, though, that Honda doesn't sell a factory-fitted CNG Amaze. CNG comes as a dealer-fitted kit, so check with your dealer that it's offered on the CVT. That kit uses a single large cylinder, which takes up most of the Amaze's 416-litre boot.

Sir, I have booked a Tata Punch CNG for around 2,500 km monthly running mostly on highways. I skipped Sonet and Nexon diesel due to DPF concerns. For long-term engine durability and highway use, is Punch CNG a good choice, or would you recommend a better option?

Verified

With 2,500 km a month and mostly highway driving, a diesel is actually the best fit for your usage. The DPF concern is understandable, but it is largely a city driving issue. Highway running keeps the exhaust temperatures high enough for the DPF to regenerate naturally, so you are unlikely to face problems. The Punch CNG is a sensible and economical car, but it is not the best choice for sustained highway use. The performance is adequate, but overtaking requires planning, and the boot space is compromised by the CNG tank. For your usage, the Tata Nexon diesel is the better choice. It is more powerful, more comfortable on highways, and will be more enjoyable to drive over long distances.
