Toyota’s best-selling model in India, the Innova, has been on sale in India from 2005. To keep it fresh, Toyota has given the Innova as many as three cosmetic updates since then, the latest one coming only last year.

Toyota has now finally begun testing the next-generation Innova MPV in India. The next-generation Innova which will be due in 2016 will be again based on Toyota’s Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform. This means, the next-gen Innova will continue to be based on a ladder-frame setup. As seen in the spy photo, the overall silhouette of the vehicle remains similar to the existing model.

The front styling takes cues from Toyota’s latest design language which is also seen on its other global offerings. The rectangular grille – with three big slats on top and three smaller ones at the bottom – is wider and taller and flows all the way to the front bumper. The headlamps on the test mule seem to have projector units as well.

When viewed from the side, the overall profile remains similar but subtle updates can be made out. The alloy wheel design is all new as well. And while the doors seem shaped the same as on the current car, the major design change visible is the re-styled glass area for third-row passengers which gives it a sporty appearence.

The overhangs look a bit longer and this could imply more interior room. Toyota is expected to focus on room in the third-row and also improve on interior quality in the new car.

The next-generation Innova is expected to use the same engines as the current car but they will be tuned for better fuel-efficiency and less noise, and will be compatible with upcoming Bharat Stage VI norms.

Expect the new Toyota Innova to be unveiled later next year and go on sale sometime in 2016. The next-generation Innova will be more an evolution of the current model than a revolution as Toyota won’t try to modify an already proven package.
