Government proposes to make obtaining driving license easier for colour-blind citizens

In a welcome move, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed making it easier for colour-blind citizens in India to obtain a driving license.

On March 16, the Ministry issued a draft notification (GSR 176 E) to amend Form 1 and 1A of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, and is soliciting comments and suggestions on the matter.

In a statement, the Ministry said it was made aware of colour-blind citizens not being able to get driving licenses, despite being fully fit to perform all functions, apart from identifying colours. After consulting medical experts, the Ministry is now considering allowing citizens with a certain degree of colour blindness to apply for a driving license. “This is being done in many countries of the world”, an official statement said.
