Vespa working on mass market scooter

Older Vespa LX125 scooter currently on sale in India.

Buzz has it that Piaggio is preparing to launch a mass market 125cc scooter this year, taking on existing scooter rivals such as Honda’s big-selling Activa. Piaggio launched its first scooter in India last year, the premium LX125, which is a retro scooter that addresses a niche segment in the market.

Sources tell us Piaggio has another ace up its sleeve. Its second 125cc automatic transmission scooter is nearing production-ready stage and will make its India debut, selling at a similar price point as rival scooters already present in the market. Styling can be expected to be contemporary relative to the LX125, with sharper lines and a slightly more aggressive stance. The new Vespa can be expected to offer more features, and slightly better performance as well. We hope this new scooter offers telescopic fork front suspension and a disc brake option.

Although Piaggio remain tight lipped, we do expect their next scooter to launch around mid 2013.
