Honda overtakes Bajaj as second-largest Indian bikemaker

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India have posted respectable sales of 2,87,177 (including exports) motorcycles and scooters in the month of July 2013. Honda has not only registered its personal best sales till date, but has surpassed Bajaj Auto to become the second largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the Indian two-wheeler industry today.

Honda, for the first time in its 13-year Indian chapter, saw motorcycle sales exceed its scooter sales, this increase in demand primarily due to its Dream series. The manufacturer sold 1,47,635 motorcycles and reflected 1,39,542 units for its scooters. The company has been posting higher sales figures domestically than Bajaj Auto consistently for the last few months, but overall (including exports), Bajaj has been the winner.

For the first time in the month of July 2013, Honda registered higher domestic and export sales, taking it to the number 2 spot. Labour issues at its Chakan plant has slowed down Bajaj Auto’s production, causing a substantial dip in domestic and overseas monthly sales.

Bajaj has been riding the wave with high inventory levels which will soon start running low, showing the true impact of Bajaj’s slowed production. Bajaj is sure to give Honda a fight to regain its No 2 position once the labour issues are sorted and normal production levels are resumed.
