Can you please suggest which is the better car: the Toyota Glanza/Taisor or the Maruti Baleno/Fronx? I am a first-time car buyer with a budget of over 10 lakh and would prefer an automatic transmission. Please recommend the best option from this list, or suggest any other cars that I should consider.

For a first-time buyer looking for an automatic in your budget, we would actually pick the Maruti Fronx AMT from your shortlist. It gives you the raised seating position and SUV-like feel that many first-time buyers appreciate, while still being easy to drive, fuel-efficient and inexpensive to maintain. It also feels a bit more special than the Baleno and Glanza. The Baleno AMT and Toyota Glanza AMT are mechanically identical, and if rear seat comfort, ride quality and value for money are your priorities, they remain excellent choices. Between the two, we would lean towards the Glanza because Toyota's warranty packages and ownership experience can be an advantage. The Toyota Taisor is essentially a Fronx underneath, so the choice between the two often comes down to styling preference, dealership experience and the offers available in your city. One car not on your list that is definitely worth considering is the Honda Amaze CVT. The CVT gearbox is smoother than the AMTs in the Maruti and Toyota models. The car is comfortable, reliable and easy to own long term. If you do not specifically need the SUV stance, it is arguably the most refined automatic you can buy around this budget.

Hi Autocar Team, My wife and I are planning to buy a new car with an AMT in the ₹10-12 lakh range. We are currently considering the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Hyundai Exter, and Maruti Suzuki Baleno. We are not considering the Tata Punch, as my brother already owns one, and we do not want the same car in the family. My wife is very particular about safety ratings, but the Hyundai Exter has not received an official crash test rating yet. We will mostly be driving in the city, with occasional highway trips. We are not in a hurry and can wait until Diwali if needed. Could you please suggest the best option within our budget (preferably AMT)? Also, are there any upcoming cars in this segment that we should wait for, or should we go ahead with the current options in the market?

Mostly city use with the odd highway run and Rs 10-12 lakh to spend points me to the Hyundai Exter HX10 AMT. The AMT here makes your daily drive easy, and in this top trim, you get one of the strongest safety feature sets in this price range. It fits your brief because its small size and high driving position make tight city roads and parking simple for you and your wife. It also rides over speed breakers and bad patches without scraping, which helps on daily commutes. For your safety focus, the Exter gets important items like electronic stability control and six airbags, so even though the official crash test score is not out yet, you still have strong protection features on board. Two trade-offs to know: like most AMTs, there can be a slight jerk when moving slowly or during gear changes in traffic. And on highways, overtaking will need some planning. If you would rather have more rear seat space and a calmer highway feel, the Maruti Baleno Alpha AMT is the other good pick in your list.If a 5-star rating is a priority, though, the facelifted Tata Punch is your best bet. Otherwise, for your usage and budget, the Exter AMT lines up best.

Hi Autocar Team, I am 35 years old and relatively new to driving, with around 6 months of experience. I am planning to buy my first car with a budget of up to ₹15 lakh. My key requirements are: Automatic transmission (preferred) Mostly city driving Suitable for a family of 4–5 members Comfortable and easy to drive for a beginner I have explored several options, but am quite confused. My considerations are: Nissan Magnite CVT – Good value, but concerns about service network, overall quality, and whether the 1.0-litre engine will feel underpowered with full load Tata Punch AMT – Like the high driving position and build quality, but concerned about service experience and AMT performance Hyundai i20 CVT – Well-rounded, but worried about low ground clearance and missing features like a 360-degree camera and ventilated seats Honda Amaze CVT – Smooth and reliable, but unsure about managing a sedan as a beginner and ground clearance concerns Hyundai Venue DCT – Appealing, but feels expensive for what it offers Maruti options (Fronx, Baleno, etc.) – Practical, but feel basic compared to feature-loaded rivals As a first-time buyer, I am finding it difficult to decide which compromises are acceptable. I am looking for a reliable, easy-to-drive automatic car with low-stress ownership (service and maintenance), suitable for city use and occasional family trips. I am also open to other suggestions, including Citroën, Mahindra, or even EVs if they make sense. Could you please guide me on the best option for my needs?

Mostly city use, a few family trips and a Rs 15 lakh cap, in that situation, the Maruti Fronx 1.0 turbo automatic, ideally the Alpha 6-speed auto, fits your brief best. It uses a smooth torque-converter automatic, so it is very easy for a beginner in stop-and-go traffic. The 1.0 turbo has enough pull for four or five people on an occasional highway run, so you will not feel it struggle the way some small non-turbo engines can with a full load. And for low-stress ownership, Maruti’s service reach and costs are hard to beat, which takes the worry out of maintenance in the long run.A few trade-offs to note for your use: five adults plus luggage will feel tight, so longer trips need some smart packing. Also, in the mid trim, you will miss some extras like a 360-degree camera or ventilated seats, though the basics you need every day are covered. On the cars you listed: the Nissan Magnite CVT drives well for the price, but Nissan’s network is thinner. The Tata Punch AMT is great for tough roads, but the AMT can feel a bit jerky in traffic. The Hyundai Venue DCT drives well but gets pricey, and dual-clutch gearboxes can feel a bit hesitant in slow city use. The Mahindra XUV 3XO is a good alternative too, with a smooth torque-converter automatic, high seating and a manageable size.Overall, for your city-first routine and peace of mind, the Fronx 1.0 turbo automatic lines up best with what you want.

I am planning to buy a new car but am confused between the Tata Punch Pure Plus (2026), Maruti Suzuki Baleno Delta, and Maruti Suzuki Fronx. My budget is around ₹8 lakh, but I can stretch it up to ₹9 lakh. My usage will include both city and highway driving, and at times, there will be three passengers seated in the rear. I am also considering increasing my budget further to buy a Tata Nexon, which has added to my confusion. Could you please help me choose the right option?

Verified

The new Tata Punch is a solid choice in the Rs 8 lakh budget; however, it is quite narrow, which means seating three in the back seat can be a bit tight. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is better in this regard, with a slightly wider and more comfortable rear seat, but do visit both showrooms and experience them yourself. Both cars are comparable in terms of performance and efficiency, but the Baleno’s four-cylinder engine is more refined than the Punch’s three-cylinder unit.Apart from the different body style and slightly raised suspension, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is essentially the same as the Baleno. Therefore, the main reason to upgrade to the Fronx is if you need the higher ground clearance or want the turbo-petrol engine, which is not available on the Baleno.Regarding the Tata Nexon, to get a reasonably well-equipped variant, you will need to stretch your budget to around Rs 10 lakh and opt for the Pure Plus petrol variant. For the additional money, you get an SUV body style, a roomier cabin with a better rear seat than the aforementioned options, and a turbo-petrol engine with much stronger performance. If it isn’t too much of a financial burden, it is worth stretching to get the Nexon. But if you want to stick to your budget, the Baleno remains a good choice.

I am planning to buy a car on-road around 10-10.5 lakh. My drive is less than 200km per month, with occasional highway drives. I want a low-maintenance car that doesn't require money even if it is not being driven or kept still, as I mostly use a two-wheeler. I live in Chandigarh. A few options that I am considering are Baleno, Kia Sonet, Exter, Fronx, and Punch. All car agencies are available near my house.

Verified
18w

Since you mostly use your two-wheeler and the car is only for occasional and limited use, we recommend getting a compact SUV, as at least it will be a bit more enjoyable on your highway drives. Of these shortlisted cars, we would recommend either the Kia Sonet or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, as they both offer a relatively strong 1.0-litre turbo-petrol option. which will be beneficial on the highway, where the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines may feel a little out of breath. Both cars are relatively reliable, although historically Maruti has had the advantage in this area, with lower maintenance costs overall. We don't recommend leaving any car for too long without driving it, as that would lead to issues and consequently expenses. This should preferably be done at least once a week, even for a short drive around the block.

Hi, I’m looking to buy my first car with an on-road budget of around ₹10 lakh in Chennai. I average about 500 km per month and also do trips to Coimbatore 3-4 times a year and occasional long drives, so comfort, features, reliability, and low maintenance are important. I’m considering the C3X Shine, 3XO, Baleno, Glanza, and Fronx, but I’m open to other suggestions that fit my usage and budget - please recommend the best choice.

Verified
29w

We would lean towards the Citroen C3X Shine with the 1.2 turbo engine and six-speed AT. It's a little above your budget but will suit your needs best as it is extremely comfortable, has a superb suspension and the best powertrain for the price. For highway driving, it is the best of all the options you have shortlisted because of the brilliant engine and dynamics. However, we have added that Citroen’s dealer network is not the best, and hence, after-sales service could be a worry. If you want to play safe, go for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, it's well equipped, reliable and comes with low-cost maintenance. It’s just that for your budget, you will get the 1.2 petrol mated to an AMT, which is nowhere near as nice to drive as the C3X.

I’m planning to buy a car under ₹8 lakh with a focus on engine quality, mileage and safety. I’m confused between the Maruti Baleno and Fronx. Is the Fronx truly safer than the Baleno? Since the Fronx has a 4-star rating in Japan NCAP, can we assume similar build quality for the India model? Please guide.

Verified
30w

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is based on the Baleno, and mechanically and structurally, both are very similar. Thus, both will be very similar when it comes to safety, too. As for the crash safety rating, yes, the Fronx has secured a 4-star rating in the Japan NCAP crash tests; however, the Baleno has secured a 5-star rating in the BNCAP tests. So the Baleno is safe too, if not safer, you must bear in mind that there could be differences in the export model. As for the engines, both Fronx and Baleno use the same 1.2 liter naturally aspirated unit. However, the Fronx also comes with the choice of a more peppy and lively 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine

I’ve been riding in a Zen Estilo for more than 15 years and have been satisfied with it. Now I want to buy a new car, but I’m confused between the Baleno and the Fronx. Please help me choose.

Verified
30w

We suggest going for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. It has SUV styling, higher ground clearance, and is a more modern offering than the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Since Maruti is expected to update the Baleno in the coming months, buying one now may leave you with a car that feels dated soon. SUVs also tend to enjoy better resale value in the Indian market, which works in your favour if you plan to upgrade later. Our preferred engine choice is the 1.0-litre turbo, but if your usage is mostly within the city and you’re working within a budget, the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine will serve you well too.
