Hyundai Ioniq 5

Built on Hyundai’s dedicated E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 5 blends retro cues with futuristic styling. Though it looks like a hatchback, it's GLC-sized, with a massive 3,000mm wheelbase. Parametric Pixel LED lights, crisp lines and 20-inch wheels give it visual drama. The sloped rear windscreen eliminates a wiper—an odd omission considering dust build-up. It earned a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

A flat floor, bright materials and panoramic roof enhance the spacious, airy cabin. Eco-friendly elements like recycled plastics and plant-based yarns meet high-quality finishes. Twin 12.3-inch screens dominate the dash, though reflections and partial obstruction are downsides. Front seats are wide, powered, ventilated, and feature ottomans. Rear seat comfort is impressive, with sliding and reclining functionality, though passengers sit slightly knees-up due to the battery underneath. Storage is abundant, and the 527-litre boot (plus a 57-litre frunk) is practical despite being shallow.

The Ioniq 5 isn’t neck-snapping quick but offers strong, seamless acceleration. 0-100kph takes 7.74s. It has drive modes and paddles for regenerative braking, including one-pedal driving. Brake pedal feel is natural and integration of regen is seamless. The 2,015kg weight is well managed thanks to rear-wheel drive and an effective suspension setup.

It has an ARAI-certified range of 631km. In real-world use, we achieved 457km, with over 500km possible in city conditions. Efficiency ranges from 5.67 to 7.07km/kWh. The 800V architecture supports ultra-fast charging: 10–80% in 57 mins with a 50kW DC charger, while a 150kW charger replenishes 32kWh in just 36 minutes.

Despite 20-inch wheels, the ride remains cushy and refined. It’s more comfort-focused than sporty, unlike the EV6, but remains composed at speed and quiet inside. The steering has good weight and accuracy, though it rolls a bit around corners.

Typical of Hyundai, it’s loaded: powered front and rear seat functions, panoramic roof, 360° camera, dual-zone climate control, Bose audio, and connected features. It also packs Level 2 ADAS tech including adaptive cruise control, AEB, blind-spot detection and lane keep assist. However, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and rear power window one-touch functions are missing. No spare tyre either—just a repair kit.

The Ioniq 5 is a head-turner, not just in design but also in execution. It’s refined, well-built, spacious, high-tech and offers outstanding range. While some features are missing, and badge snobbery might deter a few, this EV delivers luxury-level EV motoring at a relatively attainable price.
