Tata Motors has a wide range of crossover and SUV options that you could consider depending on your budget. However, since you are a first-time car buyer, we would advise you against the Tata Sierra and Harrier, which are quite large and might seem intimidating to drive.

The Tata Punch is a good starting point and worth a look, but we feel the Nexon is the best pick for your requirements. It sits at a comfortable height, so you won't need to slouch down to enter it, and the vehicle itself is of a comfortable size - roomy enough to accommodate four adults with ease yet small enough to be convenient to drive.

We'd suggest you opt for an automatic transmission version that will help remove the bother of modulating the clutch pedal. If your budget allows, the smooth dual-clutch automatic version is the one to buy.

I want to buy a diesel-powered compact SUV with an automatic transmission and good mileage. My budget is about ₹12 lakhs, and one of the options I am considering is the Tata Nexon Diesel AMT. Kindly suggest.

The Tata Nexon is a good option to consider. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is quite efficient, and the AMT gearbox is smooth enough for city use. The Nexon is also a very safe car, with a 5-star Global NCAP rating.What is also segment-best on the Nexon is the ride comfort. The suspension is tuned well for our roads, and it feels confident over bad patches. The feature list is extensive too, with ventilated seats, sunroof, a large and high-resolution touchscreen and a 360-degree camera. Another car you can consider is the Mahindra XUV 3XO. The diesel engine is very strong and more refined, and the AMT gearbox is smooth. The XUV 3XO is also very safe, with a 5-star Global NCAP rating. The rear seat is more spacious than the Nexon's, but the boot is smaller. However, out of the two, it is a nicer SUV to drive, but not as good in terms of fuel efficiency. If the economy is the top priority, the Nexon is the one to go for.

I am confused between the Mahindra BE 6 electric and the Tata Sierra diesel. I drive around 50 km daily. Which one should I buy?

The two SUVs are really very different, and the choice between the two comes down to what you want and value more. The Mahindra BE 6 is a thrilling car to drive and a very flashy one that appeals to the heart. However, there are many compromises like a difficult entry and exit, low interior space and reduced all-around visibility.The Sierra, on the other hand, is not as exciting to drive as the BE 6, but it delivers a much better user experience with very good interior space. So the electric Mahindra BE 6 would be more for the heart, while the diesel Tata Sierra would be more for the head.
