Hi Autocar, I’m planning to buy a car for my parents. They are new to driving and nearly 60 years old. My budget is ₹6-10 lakh, and I’m open to both new and second-hand car suggestions. I prefer an automatic transmission. Please advise suitable options.

If you are buying a new car, the recently updated Tata Punch would be a good choice. With its taller height and wide opening doors, entry and exit are very easy. The elevated seating position also gives you a good view outside, and that, along with the car's compact size, makes it quite easy to drive.

If you are looking to buy a used car, you can check out a Maruti Baleno. The car sits lower than the Punch, but it's also easy to drive with light controls and look for pre-2022 cars with the CVT gearbox. It is much smoother than an AMT autobox, which the Punch and Baleno now come with. When buying a used car, purchase it from a reputable reseller like Spinny.

I am planning to buy a new car in April/May with an on-road budget of ₹15-20 lakh. I am confused between the Mahindra 3XO AX7L, Tata Sierra Adventure Plus, and the new Kia Seltos HTX, all with automatic turbo engines. My monthly running will be 400-600 km within Mumbai city, with 4-5 occasional highway trips a year. Since Sierra and Seltos are not yet available for test drives, I am unsure which to choose. Please guide me.

Between the three cars you have shortlisted, the Tata Sierra Adventure Plus is the nicest, especially because of its turbo-petrol engine and torque converter (automatic) combination. Its powertrain will feel smooth, refined and powerful, good for city and highway driving, both. The Kia Seltos turbo's dual-clutch automatic can feel a bit jerky at low speeds or in bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions. If your usage is mainly in the city, opt for the 1.5L petrol-IVT instead, which is a far smoother option. Since you have the budget, and don't mind opting for a larger car, we'd rule out the Mahindra XUV 3XO as the Sierra Turbo-AT or Seltos 1.5 Petrol-IVT deliver a more premium overall experience.

I am 63 years old, 174cm tall and weigh 80kg. I have been riding motorcycles since 1975 and am planning to buy the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 mainly for long highway tours. I would appreciate your advice.

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is an accomplished touring bike because it has neutral and spacious ergonomics, good luggage-carrying ability, comfortable suspension and a powerful 40hp engine. On the highway, there are only two potential irritants. The first is that, depending on your height and the sort of helmet you wear, there could be some wind buffeting, which will get bothersome over long journeys. The second is that between 5,000-6,000rpm - which in sixth gear translates to roughly 100-120kph - there's some vibration in the handlebars and footpegs. Depending on what speeds you ride at, this may or may not be an issue for you. A long test ride is in order so you can decide whether or not this Royal Enfield bike is right for you.
