I want to buy an automatic car in the sub-SUV segment. I’ve shortlisted the Hyundai Elevate, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Hyundai Victorious Venue, and Hyundai Creta. My budget is around ₹14-16 lakh. I’m a normal driver - neither very expert nor very enthusiastic. I want to use my car for the next 10 years with low maintenance and good reliability. My average distance will be around 300 km per month, mostly in the city and rarely on highways. Could you suggest a car with an automatic variant based on my requirements?

We would recommend you look at the new Kia Seltos. The new car is built on Kia's latest platform, bringing in some new tech, including the ability to have over-the-air updates for many modules.

This will be handy for you, given that you are planning to keep the car for a long time. Also, given that you are not so enthusiastic about driving and your running per month is very low, we would recommend the 1.5 litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine coupled to the automatic.

The autoxbox is a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is quite smooth and, with the 1.5 NA engine, does a good job as a daily driver in the city. Lastly, of course, Kia's are generally reliable and should do you well over the course of your ownership.

I want a 5‑seater car for my family with maximum space. Most of my driving will be on the highway and minimal in the city, with 2-3 long trips per month. My budget goes up to ₹24 lakh. I already have a Tata Safari and have not faced any issues with the car, service, or dealership. Can I go with the Tata Sierra Accomplished variant?

Since you're happy with your Tata Safari and the after-sales experience has been trouble-free, go ahead with the Tata Sierra. It is a very comfortable and spacious SUV, and its ride comfort is excellent, both in the city and on the highway. You could opt for the 1.5-litre diesel version, which delivers respectable performance for your highway drives and is likely to be quite efficient too, although refinement isn't as good as some other offerings out there. Alternatively, you could opt for the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol-automatic, which is excellent in terms of performance and refinement. If you are ok with lower fuel efficiency (than the diesel version), the 1.5 turbo-petrol is the one we'd recommend.

I am looking for a 7-seater car with a maximum budget of ₹25 lakh that is suitable for both city and highway driving. Which car would be the best option for my needs?

Considering your requirements, you should take a look at the Kia Carens Clavis. The MPV is a well-rounded package that offers a comfortable ride, a spacious and practical cabin for seven people and a lengthy list of features. The Carens Clavis can be had with a 116hp, 1.5-litre diesel and a 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, both of which can be had with manual or automatic gearbox options. Alternatively, you can also consider the Hyundai Alcazar, which is mechanically identical to the Carens Clavis.

Hi, I am planning to buy an SUV for my family. My budget is around 22 lakhs. I would prefer safety and reliability and efficiency when making the purchase. I have considered sierra, seltos and xuv 700. Please help me decide which one to go for. This will be my first expensive car purchase.

The recently-launched Mahindra XUV 7XO is a good option to consider. It replaces the XUV700 and gets interior and exterior changes, along with more features. It is spacious, comfortable and has a strong set of engines. The 2.0-litre petrol is smooth and refined, and the 2.2-litre diesel is punchy and relatively efficient. You also get the added practicality of a third row of seats, which the Kia Seltos and Tata Sierra don't get. Mahindra XUV 7XO price range from Rs 13.66 lakh to Rs 24.92 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

I am confused between the all-new Kia Seltos NA HTK IVT and the Turbo HTK iMT. My driving is 60% city and 40% highway. I have read many reviews about iMT issues in the Sonet and warranty claims being rejected. Are these issues resolved in the new Seltos, and which variant would you recommend?

Some owners have reported certain usage-based issues, like the iMT wearing out the clutch prematurely compared to a standard (three-pedal) manual version, and the actuator fluid needs to be changed periodically. These aside, the iMT works fine, giving users the convenience of a clutch-pedal-free drive, while rowing through the gears manually. The Kia Seltos iMT is paired with the turbo-petrol engine, and for your 40 per cent highway driving usage, you will appreciate the turbo's stronger performance, especially while overtaking. But if you have a sedate driving style, we'd strongly recommend getting the 1.5 petrol-IVT option instead, for its sheer smoothness and convenience. The drive experience will feel far more seamless and effort-free in the city, and even though outright performance isn't as strong as the turbo's, the petrol-IVT does the job quite competently.
