I am a first-time driver planning to buy my own car. I really like the Skoda brand, so I am considering the Skoda Kushaq Signature Automatic. My city usage will be very minimal, and I need a suggestion on whether I am choosing the right car. I am 43 years old and want to know what is better for a first-time driver: a manual car or an automatic transmission. I am more concerned about safety and reliability, and my budget is ₹12 lakh. What is the best car, as per expert suggestion?

The Skoda Kylaq is one of the better compact SUVs in the market, so if you are inclined towards it is certainly worth buying.

Being an SUV, the elevated seating position, which gives you good visibility of the road, is useful for first-time car buyers like yourself. We would advise you to opt for an automatic transmission because it will make your life behind the wheel a lot easier.

The Kylaq’s 6-speed automatic is quite smooth and responsive, and paired to the 1.0 litre TSI engine, performance is effortless too. In terms of reliability, the Skoda doesn’t have the best reputation for service, but we don’t think that should be a deal breaker.

With its 5-star crash rating, the Kylaq is very safe and known for its tough build.

I want to buy an automatic car for daily use. My budget is around ₹12 lakh. Which one should I buy?

It's hard to recommend a car without knowing more of your specific needs, rear seat space, importance of headroom, mileage, driving pattern, etc. However, since you state daily use, we assume you mean mostly city driving, thus we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq. The auto gearbox is a torque convertor unit, which is the smoothest type of autobox to have. In city conditions, its smooth and seamless shifting is something you would really appreciate. At around your budget of Rs 12 lakh, you would also get the Signature trim, which comes fairly well equipped with features like a height adjustable drivers seat. A sunroof and a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Hi, I am Kunal from Kolkata and am planning to buy my first car. I have recently started learning to drive. My usage will be around 45% city and 55% highway. I am confused between the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Skoda Kylaq, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. My priorities are a solid build quality (as a first-time car owner), good mileage, LED lamps, a quality music system, and low maintenance. Please advise.

From the options you've listed, we'd recommend you shortlist the Hyundai Venue and Skoda Kylaq, both of which are turbo-petrol sub-4-metre SUVs. On account of their turbo-petrol engines, these will feel a bit more effortless to drive on the highway compared to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Grand Vitara that are powered by a 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol engine. Additionally, both cars get LED headlamps, have good audio systems (the Venue has an edge with its branded Bose speakers), and both are generously equipped with similar safety kits. The Venue's turbo-petrol will be a touch more efficient, and its maintenance costs will be a bit lower than the Kylaq's as well. Also, its cabin is comparatively more spacious too. The Kylaq, on the other hand, has an excellent ride-handling balance, which gives you tremendous confidence while driving. We'd suggest you drive both of these, and pick the one that appeals to you more.

Hello, I am planning to purchase an automatic car purely for city use, with a daily running of roughly 20 km. I currently own a Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT, which is now 10 years old, and that is the primary reason for this upgrade. My priorities are easy ingress and egress for seniors, comfort, and strong AC performance. My budget is around ₹10 lakh, which can stretch up to ₹12 lakh. I am considering the Taisor S Plus AMT, Kylaq Signature AT, Sonet HTK(O) DCT, XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT, and Venue HX5 DCT. Could you please advise which would be the best choice for my requirements?

Among your choices, the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT is a good fit for your needs. For 20km/day city use, the torque-converter automatic is smoother than the AMT in the Taisor and the DCTs in the Venue and Sonet. It is also more spacious than the Skoda Kylaq, and its tall stance makes it easier to get in and out of than the Taisor. The ride is smooth over speed breakers and potholes, and the AC cools quickly in summer. Before you make your final decision, visit the dealerships along with the seniors in your family to see which one they find most comfortable.
