I am buying a car for my mother. We need an automatic car mainly for city use, and long trips will be rare. I am considering the Exter S AMT, as its AMT is said to be better than others at this price point, and it also offers higher ground clearance. The other option is the i20 Magna CVT, which is around Rs 50 to 55K more expensive than the Exter S AMT variant. For bumper-to-bumper traffic and city driving, should I go for the i20 CVT, or is the Exter AMT smooth enough to stick with? Also, which transmission is more reliable in the long term?

Even though it is a bit pricier, the Hyundai i20 CVT (or IVT) feels like a more premium car compared to the Hyundai Exter AMT. The i20's drive experience is smoother and more refined thanks to its CVT, and it is more spacious and comfortable too. Also, while ground clearance is less than the Exter, it is more than adequate for our conditions.

Besides ground clearance, the only other reason to consider the Exter over the i20 is for its more compact dimensions, which make it relatively easier to manoeuvre and park in tight spaces. These aside, the i20 is superior in nearly every aspect.

I am planning to buy a car around ₹11 lakhs. I prefer top-end variants with automatic transmission. I tried Hyundai AMT, which I didn't like at all because of the jerks in gear shifts. The Honda Amaze CVT is a good pick for you. Its CVT gearbox is smooth and delivers a pleasant driving experience, superior to what you'd get with AMTs in the same price band. The Amaze CVT in fully-loaded VX form fits your budget and is worth a look. You could also look at the Tata Altroz DCT in Accomplished S trim. It's well equipped and, while performance is unexciting, the gearbox is very smooth. Other options we'd recommend considering include the Nissan Magnite CVT, Renault Kiger CVT and Hyundai i20 CVT. Do note, their top-end versions are pricier than Rs 11 lakh.

We would suggest you consider the Hyundai i20 IVT. The gearbox is smooth, the cabin is spacious, and within your budget, you can get the Sportz (O) variant. It is compact, easy to drive and park in the city, and also offers a reasonably large boot.If you want something slightly larger, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. It is more spacious inside, more comfortable for a larger family and also has a bigger boot. The AMT gearbox is not as smooth as the CVT in the i20, but it is well-tuned and will also be more efficient.

I want to buy a petrol automatic SUV in the range of 17 to 18 lakh. I am considering the Grand Vitara Zeta AT, Victoris ZXI, and Creta S(O) IVT. My annual average usage is between 5000 and 6000km. Please suggest a good option among the three vehicles in terms of smooth journey, mileage, and maintenance cost.

The Hyundai Creta is the better all-rounder and offers more space, a stronger and smoother powertrain (1.5 P IVT) and marginally better comfort. However, given your priorities of mileage and maintenance costs, it's hard to beat Maruti Suzuki on these fronts.Whether you choose the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara or Victoris is a matter of preference (and which dealership is more accessible to you - Arena or Nexa), as they are essentially the same car underneath, using the same 1.5-litre petrol engine and 6-speed AT gearbox. Despite using a torque converter automatic gearbox, which is not typically associated with good mileage, both Maruti SUVs offer exceptional fuel economy, and maintenance costs over the course of their lives will be among the lowest in the segment.
