Hi Autocar. I drive an Elite i20 petrol and want to upgrade to an SUV. My daily driving is up to 10 km, and I rarely use highways, but I want a vehicle with strong performance and top safety. My budget is up to ₹20 lakh, and I have no fuel type preference. Please suggest suitable options.

Since your driving is very little and almost all of it within the city, we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq automatic version.

Most automatics in this segment come with an automated manual transmission (AMT), which are not smooth shifters. The Kylaq, on the other hand, comes with a torque converter (TC), which is the smoothest type of automatic transmission around.

As for performance, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol is lively and strong enough, especially for the city. As for safety, it is well kitted out with safety features like standard 6 airbags, and it also secured a 5-star crash rating in the BNCAP tests.

The latter is similar to the Pulsar in its style and riding experience, but the former is slightly more cruiser-y in its styling. A test ride of all three should help you figure out which bike suits you best.

My annual driving is around 5,000-6,000 km. Please suggest suitable options. The Mahindra XUV700 is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable, and comes with a 7-seater configuration and will fit within your budget. The XUV700 also comes with a long list of features, including cruise control, which is part of the standard equipment. However, if you can, we would recommend waiting a bit as an updated version - called the XUV 7XO - will be launching early this month. You then benefit from having the newer car and all the updates it would bring. However, bear in mind the price may go up a bit.

Asked by: PRAKASH I have driven my car for around 35,000 km. Should I retain it or sell it and upgrade to a new car? 35,000 kms is not a very high mileage at all, for any car. So if the car is running fine and you are happy with its performance, we would not recommend selling it purely based on its mileage covered. However, if you are still keen on a change to a newer car, you could look at the new Mercedes GLC or the BMW X3.

Asked by: Venkat I have been driving an Elite i20 petrol (70,000 km), mostly on highways (85:15). I am now thinking of an upgrade, but my current usage in Mysore is very low - sometimes I don’t even drive 200 km per month. Is it sensible to buy a new car given this low usage, and if so, what would be the best option? For cars and bikes, purely from a financial standpoint, buy only if you truly need to; an emotional need counts too. If your current car is running fine, there’s no reason to replace it. As long as it’s not giving you any trouble, it should comfortably last another 20,000-30,000 km. By then, you’ll also have many more new models to choose from.
