Dear Autocar team, I am looking to buy a car for my family with a budget of up to ₹16.5 lakhs. I want to prioritise safety, mileage, and low maintenance cost. My daily running is 45 km, and once a week I do around 300 km on the highway, which totals over 2,000 km per month. I would like to ask whether I should choose an automatic or manual, CNG or petrol, and if petrol is considered safer than CNG. Also, which car and variant would you suggest? Thanks!

Since your running is quite high, a CNG car would do you well, however make sure there are easily accessible CNG pumps in your area.

If there is a lot of traffic in your area and your driving requires a lot of gearshifts, then yes, an automatic makes sense; however, unfortunately, there aren't any mid-size CNG automatics available.

Your best option here would be the Tata Punch CNG, which is available with an automatic gearbox and has a usable boot with dual CNG tanks tucked in below the floor.

However, if you want to stick with a mid-size vehicle, then you would have to opt for a manual, and the Maruti Suzuki Victoris would be a good option here. It too has a clear boot as the CNG tank is below the floor.

Yes, the Tata Punch Adventure AMT is an excellent option, given your requirements. It's tall with a high seating position, which gives you a commanding view out - great for a new driver, yet it's compact enough not to be intimidating around town. It will also feel like a good upgrade from your old Celerio.Since safety is also a consideration for you, the Punch has been given a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating and gets 6 airbags as standard, plus a good amount of standard safety equipment. If there's a potential drawback, it's that the Punch's 1.2 petrol engine and AMT gearbox aren't the smoothest combination, and as a new driver, the jerkiness at low speeds is something you will have to learn to drive around.Also consider the Hyundai Exter SX Smart AMT and the Nissan Magnite Kuro AMT as well, as both have smoother powertrains than the Punch.

I am planning to buy a Brezza CNG Zxi. I have heard a facelift is expected around April-May 2026, which may come with an underbody CNG tank and a manual 6-speed gearbox replacing the existing 5-speed gearbox. Should I wait, or should I buy right now?

The update is expected around April-May 2026, and there are chances that the CNG version could get improvements such as a better-packaged CNG tank, like in the Maruti Victoris and possibly a 6-speed manual. Even if the exact changes are different from what is currently expected, the facelift will at least bring cosmetic updates and feature additions.Since the timeline is quite close, waiting a few weeks will give you clarity on what the updated model offers. If the changes are meaningful, you can buy the new version. If they are minor, you can still choose the current model, often with better discounts as dealers clear older stock.Given how close the facelift appears to be, it makes sense to wait a little before buying the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG so you can decide with full information once the updated model is revealed.

I want to buy an automatic car mainly for city use with a budget of around ₹10 lakh. I shortlisted the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, but I have heard rumours that its production might be stopped. Is there any update on this, and what are some good alternatives to the Ignis?

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis is still in production. It is worth noting that the Ignis is a bit long in the tooth now, and sales are very low, especially so by Maruti standards. Thus, there could be a possibility of it being discontinued or updated. In any case, being a Maruti model that has been on sale for a while now, you would still be able to get it serviced for a fairly long period of time.If you are, however, worried about this, you could consider the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, which are two cars that will offer similar benefits of being compact, high-riding and available with an automatic transmission.
