I’m planning to buy the Tata Harrier Hyperion (1.5L petrol), which was recently launched and costs around ₹23 lakh. I would like opinions on whether buying the petrol version at this price is a good decision. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is new and hasn’t been long-term tested in real-world conditions yet. Many reviewers say it isn’t underpowered, but I’m still concerned about real-world performance in situations like city traffic, highway overtakes, driving with the AC on, or with a fully loaded car. I also want to know the practical, real-world mileage (city and highway) that owners are actually getting, not just the claimed figures. Should I wait for more long-term reliability feedback before buying, or is it safe to purchase now? Alternatively, would it be wiser to choose the diesel version for proven reliability and better fuel efficiency? My main concerns are performance, real-world fuel efficiency, reliability of a newly launched engine, and whether paying ₹23 lakh for the petrol variant is justified.

Your concerns about Tata's 1.5-litre Hyperion engine being new are valid. If you are not in a hurry, it is advisable to wait a few months to see what buyers have to say about its reliability and efficiency. Do note that the same engine also powers the Tata Sierra, which is selling in huge numbers, so owner feedback should be coming soon.

That said, the Hyperion engine is one of Tata's best engines to date. During our first drive review, we found that performance was much better than the displacement suggests. It picks up speed effortlessly and feels grunty in city driving, and even on the highway, it does not run out of breath.

We also tried the same engine in the Tata Safari with six people on board and the AC on, and even then, performance was more than adequate. Real-world fuel efficiency will not be great, expect single digits in the city.

The diesel will offer better efficiency and is a more proven powerplant, and if you are driving huge mileages, then it is the better choice. However, performance is not as strong as the petrol.

If you are still concerned about reliability, we suggest you look at the Kia Seltos. The current generation has grown in size, resulting in a roomier interior, and the 1.5-litre TGDi petrol offers good performance and proven reliability. Before you decide, take test drives of both cars.

I currently own a 2021 Hyundai Venue (iMT) Petrol. I usually travel to my hometown in Punjab once a month, and the rest of the time, I drive within the city. I am looking to buy an SUV with good aesthetics and build quality; the first car that comes to mind is the Tata Harrier. I was eagerly waiting for the petrol variant, and this year, that wish finally came true. I am planning to purchase the Fearless+ variant in white. However, considering Tata's reputation for manufacturing defects and resale value, should I stick with my choice, or would you suggest a better option, like a Mahindra XUV700?

Hi , I was waiting for tata harrier AT in patrol for last couple of years, and i bought it on Navratri, and it was the first patrol harrier in city . Man amazing pickup ,super chill ac effortless gear shifts driven about 550 km in 10days , getting milage of 8.07kmpl tankful to tankful , Abd milage will increase after 1 and 2nd service Every thing is working well . So brother don't bother about the quality and performance of engine . Tata has come a long way . At 100 kmph speed engine ram is about 1800 rpm which is relaxed and it will certainly give good milage After 2nd service will take it for long transcity trip .

I would suggest wait for at least 6+ months for engine reliability and other concerns. We made that mistake when we got the Altroz turbo variant in April 2021, relatively new turbo engine at the time. There were issues where after 1 year the service team said engine is having issues and needs replacement, in spite of doing that (within warranty) it still gave problems. When we gave it for service around 2024 (due to persistent problems), Tata personnel said that our turbo variant is not being sold now and that a newer engine is being developed. Might sound scary and negative for you but bitter truth. Also, please ensure the service centres are professional and have a good knowledge because I always felt they were polite but not knowledgeable. Every time a new problem would arise when we give for service. Please keep reliability and service in mind before purchasing a Tata.

I have a XUV 700 Diesel AX7 L 2022 with 80 K km. I want to buy a new SUV. I like the Tayron but it is costly. I am waiting for the Kodiaq facelift and Majestor, or an electric Mahindra SUV, or the facelift Fortuner—looking for the best option. If I need to stretch my budget, I might also consider. May be get some offers if i wait Please suggest

Hi Autocar Team, I am planning to buy a used SUV in Pune with a budget of up to ₹10 lakh and would really appreciate your suggestions. We are a family of four, and I am the only driver. I am 6’2” and slightly on the heavier side, so cabin space, seat comfort, and good driving ergonomics are very important to me. My usage includes a daily office commute of around 20 km, along with regular weekend trips and frequent drives to Konkan. Because of this, good ground clearance, ride comfort, and highway stability are essential requirements. My priorities are: Safety Comfort Reliability Low maintenance costs Decent fuel efficiency Good boot space Could you please advise on the following: Best used SUVs under ₹10 lakh for my requirements Whether petrol or diesel would suit my usage better Manual vs automatic transmission Ideal model year/age of vehicle to target Which models or engines should be avoided in the used car market Reliable platforms to buy from, such as Spinny, Cars24, CarDekho, etc. Important things to inspect before finalising a used SUV purchase Looking forward to your advice. Thanks!

City commute plus frequent Konkan runs, a family of four, and a tall driver - in this brief, a used Hyundai Creta diesel is the best fit under Rs 10 lakh. It rides well over broken roads, stays steady at highway speeds, has a big boot, and the wide seat and upright driving position suit a 6’2” frame well. The diesel is reliable and uses less fuel on long trips.A strong alternative, if you don’t find a clean Creta, is the Renault Duster diesel manual for its comfy seats and torquey engine. On petrol vs diesel: a petrol would be better with just a 20km daily commute, but since you are frequently heading out of town with family in tow, a diesel makes more sense. Manual vs automatic: an automatic eases Pune traffic, and the Creta's smooth torque-converter auto is the reliable pick in this price range.Target 2018-2021 cars with under 70,000km. Buy from reliable sources like Spinny with inspection and return/warranty. Check the full service history, accidental/flood signs, clutch and suspension health, tyre age, underbody rust, A/C, electricals, and do an OBD scan. Ensure the driver's seat adjusts far enough back for you.
