I recently bought a Mahindra XUV700, but after the trade deal, all branded international cars are going to come to India at lower prices. Did I make a mistake by buying the Mahindra XUV700 in a hurry? I could have driven branded international cars.

Don't worry, you are fine to have bought your Mahindra XUV700 when you did, and that's for a few reasons. For one, it's a well-sorted, great all-round SUV that you no doubt researched before purchasing, and chose above other SUVs also available in the market.
For one, the FTA does not necessarily mean new car brands will come to India. Even without setting up a factory, the cost of entering a new market like India is very high and brands will still have to invest in dealerships, leadership, service network, staff, marketing and much more.
Then there are the restrictions of the various FTA deals. The India-US FTA applies only to cars with engines above 3,000cc, while the India-EU FTA applies only to cars above around Rs 16 lakh, and then too the duty reduction will be in phases and slabs, so it's not likely that all cars will get the same reduction.
It's also up to the brand whether or not to launch new models here (based on their viability, not just the price) and whether or not to reduce prices of existing imported models - some brands have already said they will not do this.
Moreover, all these deals are still in discussion and will be introduced in phased manners, so it will be a few years before they are introduced, and even more years before we get the full benefit. So your decision to buy an XUV 700 now will not be affected.

Hello, I want to convert my BMW X1 petrol model (2011) into an electric vehicle. Please suggest the best EV conversion kit and a reliable company that can carry out the installation. Thanks.

Converting a petrol car to an electric one is a complex process that requires a lot of engineering and expertise, and it will be very expensive to do so. It is not as simple as just swapping out the engine for an electric motor. The process involves removing the engine, fuel tank, exhaust system, and other components and replacing them with an electric motor, batteries, and other components. Even after all this, the car's wiring, suspension, and other systems need to be modified to work with and accommodate the new powertrain.Basically its as good as re-engineering the entire car, and frankly, no one can do this reliably at this point. Thus, we would not recommend a conversion, especially so on a car that is complex and advanced like the BMW X1. Plus, there is also the legality of the car to consider, as the registration details would not match. You should trade in your X1 for the new iX1, as BMW will certainly have some exchange offers to make.

Long-time reader and a fan of your work. I quite like the Tata Curvv, but my family will buy it only if an expert suggests it. So can you please suggest a strictly Indian-make car that has a boot space of exactly 500 L, a flower-petals alloy design, and is equipped with a 1.2 L turbo petrol engine mated to a DCA, preferably manufactured by a Belgian firm? I am not too keen on good rear visibility. I know this set of requirements leaves a lot of options off the table. I look forward to reading your recommendation.

Haha, yes, you are right, the Tata Curvv suits your requirements perfectly, and there is nothing else that will be a match. Honestly, if you love a car that much, go ahead and enjoy it. Your family is probably worried about the service and reliability, and while Tata Motors is yet to get to the top, they have made many improvements. Besides being a Tata Motors customer already, we're sure you are having a decent ownership experience, and that is why you want to buy another one.

I'm stuck between the Skoda Kushaq and the Tata Harrier diesel. I drive daily 75km, with nearly 20km in the city and the remaining on the highway. Family size of 4 or occasionally 5. And I love exploring and travelling to forests and mountains by car. Previously used Ford Ecosport and was very happy with it. Now, suggest to me a good car among these two.

While the Skoda Kushaq is a fun-to-drive SUV that would make a suitable successor to your Ford Ecosport, given your requirements and usage, it's not the right choice for you. The cabin is a tight squeeze for five passengers, and considering you drive as much as 75km per day, its petrol engine's fuel costs might add up over time. The Tata Harrier diesel is a larger SUV with a bigger boot that should be well-suited to your exploratory drives out of the city with your family. Its strong diesel engine will handle these trips well and return reasonable fuel economy. It is also quite fun to drive and has very comfortable suspension. Do note, however, that it is a segment above the Kushaq, and the diesel version especially will be considerably more expensive.
